Motormouth Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe has criticised media outlets who heap praise on ‘art’ games (that will be us then).
“Just because there’s wind blowing and a minimal soundtrack and vast open spaces to explore and a slow pace doesn’t mean that the game you are playing is art,” said Jaffe.
‘Real art and genuinely important work doesn’t need to continually toot its own horn. The very nature of something being artistic and important means that- except in rare cases- its power is evident without anyone having to tell you that it is,’ continued the wise old sage.
David describes games as ‘smoke and mirrors bullshit’ and that websites and magazines that sing the praises of ‘artful’ games have a detrimental effect.
‘Publisher cash gets taken away from traditional games,’ he claims.
Well if it means more of Journey, Flower, Limbo, Last Guardian and Heavy Rain and less of Call Of Duty, Twisted Metal and Kane & Lynch then I doubt you’ll find many of the TSA staff complaining.
Sorry David, on your own on this one.

It makes me laugh the amount of people on here that immediately brand someone an idiot, tool, twat etc. just because they have a different opinion to them on something. Has he said anything offensive to warrent being called offensive names? No. Live and let live people.
Dange
agree 100%, he is entitled to his own opinion as is everyone on here but I personally like that he isnt afraid to say whats on his mind rather than suger coat everything.
Dange
I see what he is saying, I dont agree (I love games like Heavy Rain, Flow, Flower etc) but I get his point.

Wow, when did games like Call of Duty, Killzone, Uncharted and Halo, Gears all be come second fidle to games like flower? Reading the comments on here you’d forget that this was a website dedictaed to video games.
I liked flower and i liked heavy rain, but if i had to choose between Uncharted 3 or flower 2, it’s Uncharted every time.
I think Jaffe is on the money with this one. If you have to constantly point out that your game is “art”, then you’re doing it wrong.
“Well if it means more of Journey, Flower, Limbo, Last Guardian and Heavy Rain and less of Call Of Duty, Twisted Metal and Kane & Lynch then I doubt you’ll find many of the TSA staff complaining”
Really, that’s where the site is headed? More flower and less call of duty? Seems like an odd way to cater to a user base that (one would assume) is made up of “core gamer”.
I’m all for these “artsy” games, but not at the expense of games like Mass Effect, Uncharted and all the other games that aren’t considered artsy.
Kronik76
I have to agree 100%
Peco
Smoke and mirrors bulldung? He’s having a laugh.

Haha Wonderfully put.

If it can create an emotional response (other than anger and frustration) then it’s art (by my definition, you’re welcome to have your own)
But a game doesn’t have to be art to be enjoyable, in fact I can’t think of any game I’ve played where I’d say all of it is art, but some of them have elements of it in them, and I think that is all we can ask for.
Kronik76
Flatulence can create an emotional response, but you wouldn’t call that art!
Mr_writer
Oh yeh cause games are all about ‘art’ and not about that thing called ‘fun’. If being stuck up your own arse going on about how great an games ‘art’ is rather then fun then I shall be avoiding this place like the plauge. Its like PC gamers looking down on console gamers. Oh and didnt David also create God of War? If so why not credit him for that as well? Oh I see cause then you’d see how daft you are.

I’m not keen on ‘artsy’ games either. But then again, ‘art’ is generally wasted on me anyway. Whether it’s the Angel of the North, an unmade bed, a piece of Blu-Tack stuck to a wall, or a Picasso, it’s all irrelevant, worthless and frequently over-priced junk to me.
That said, I loved Heavy Rain, though I don’t see that as ‘artsy’, just ‘different’; flOw bored me; never bothered with Flower; tried the demo of Undergarden for 5 minutes, then deleted it, seeing no real point to it; probably won’t bother with Journey either.
kevatron400
“never bothered with Flower” is a crime to this generation’s gaming! I seriously think you should, not because it’s ‘artsy’ or even because I say you should. You should play it because it’s a geniunely very very good game, and one that’s very different to most other games out there.
Kronik76
I disagree. Flower is definitely original, but I wouldn’t call it a very, very good game. Good yes, but I picked it up for about £2 and had I have payed more than that I would have been a little disappointed. It certainly hasn’t given me as much enjoyment hours wise as many of the big titles such as CoD, Fifa & Uncharted.

The point was made already but re-iteration is always nice..
GOD OF WAR!!
The end.

Rob92 and Colmshan1990 seem to understand where he is coming from….
I think there is a valid point in there, but I do love a ‘beautiful game’.
