Steam Functions Detailed For Portal 2 PS3

Last E3 we were pleasantly surprised, and curious, when Valve announced Steam functionality for the PS3 version of Portal 2. Over on the US PS Blog they have now gone into a bit more detail regarding what to expect:

“Portal 2 for PlayStation 3 is the first title to support Steam on a console. Specifically, that means it offers cross-platform matchmaking, gameplay, friends, chat, and achievements, all powered by Steam. Steam on the PS3 also saves co-op game progress and single player saved games to the Steam Cloud, enabling players to pick up where they left off on any PlayStation 3.

Steam makes its appearance on the PS3 as an overlay within Portal 2. Here, the Steam overlay provides access to Steam Friends, displaying their in-game or online status and providing a quick pathway to text chats, player profiles, friend requests, and game invites. Steam Achievements are earned in lockstep with PSN Trophies and are also accessible within the Steam overlay.

Steam on the PS3 provides access to all of these features once the player has linked their PlayStation Networkaccount with a Steam account, which is done right within the game. A Steam user can login to an existing account, and anyone new to Steam can create an account with the click of a button.”

It sounds like Valve has made good on its promise to make the PS3 the best version on console.

  1. This sounds great and all, but my computer isn’t good enough to run Portal 2 anyway. Damn video card! Nice idea though.

    • Mine won’t be able to run it either. “Damn…everything about my comp!”

      • My laptop would be able to run this… if it wasn’t broken.

    • I thought the whole idea of this article was portal 2 on PS3, being able to connect with PC steam players.
I wonder how they do the steam overlay, can’t thhink they’ll use the PS button, maybe select?

  2. Woo, most excited about this, as usually I can’t play co-op online due to not having any gaming friends (although yes, I do have one or two friends). This means I can have it on my Mac while my brother is on the PS3. In the same room too, no need to buy headsets…

    • Stick around this site. We’re a great bunch ;)

  3. So Is Steam accessible from the PS3 and you can purchase a digital copy from Steam? Or do you need to buy the Portal2 PS3 disc, that then accesses the Steam network in order to play online, kinda like how you buy a Battlefield game that is linked to an EA account that’s required to play online. It seems cool, but also kinda sounds like just another “online pass”.

    • As far as I know, if you buy the PS3 version and link your PSN account to a Steam account, you’ll have access to the PC/Mac versions for free when you log in to your Steam account on your PC/Mac.

  4. Cool, got a few friends who play mostly on PC so it’ll be nice to be able to play with them.

I was going to get this for 360 since that’s where i played Portal, but this is certainly more than enough incentive to get it for PS3.

  5. I bought Portal 2 off steam for PC – gives you the first for free. Will stick with the PC version thanks!

    • But if you would have bought the ps3 version you would get the pc version at no extra cost. And you can get portal for just a few pounds.

      • Exactly, I am unsure why people are passing on the PS3 version when the PC version is included already.

  6. A few of my mates are PC gamers, so the cross-platform co-op will be great!

  7. I can start chats with steam friends?

Holy shi…….. might as well be a app as well!

    • Cross-platform chat, but still no cross-game chat. I don’t sony are allowed it.

      • Must be very technical stuff going on

  8. I feel ripped off for buying the 360 version. Surely it should come at a lower price?

    • They’re only doing this because 360 gamers get Left 4 Dead and PS3 don’t. It’s unfair if you don’t like L4D but that life.

    • Its out now?

    • HAHA!

    • OH WAIT…

    • Blame Microsoft, they are the ones who wont allow any cross networking on their console. Thats what has topped them getting Final Fantasy 14 (it thats correct?? can’t really remember the article as it was ages ago)

    • Maybe, MS really need to stop that, be more open

  9. Finally developers are thinking with their minds and not their bribed wallets.
    Ps3 all the way.

  10. Looking forward to this game :-)

    • I want that cool portal rubix cube thing that comes with the special ed.
