PSN Downtime Makes BBC News

The PSN’s been down now for well over a day, with sign-in still currently unavailable (even though queued downloads will still work) and there’s no sign of anything changing any time soon.

We’ve come up with ten things to do whilst the PSN is down, but Sony haven’t updated for ages now, so we’ve no idea what’s going on other than Anonymous, responsible for downtime earlier in the month, are saying they’re not involved.

“While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves, AnonOps was not related to this incident and takes no responsibility for it,” said an apparent official statement.

“A more likely explanation is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous’ previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is accutally an internal problem with the companies servers.”

Worse for Sony, however, is the news reaching the all-seeing eye of the BBC, with a story on the news site today.

The article, which will hit more people than (presumably) all the gaming sites in the world put together (and wrapped twice around the moon) will mean that Sony’s public perception will be taking a battering.

Sony’s lack of updates is starting to grind.

  1. We don’t pay for this service. That is all.

    • not directly.
and one of the pillars that support the ps3 as a gaming system is the psn.
demanding they fix the psn right now would be churlish, but saying we would really like an update as to what is going on is not too much to ask i think most people will agree.

      • I would be one of the first to agree with you.

    • You pay. How does Sony cover the costs? As a gift to you?

      • not shore what you mean its not a charge service like xbox live.

      • Maybe we fund it indirectly, but in comparison with Xbox Live, we don’t have to pay.

      • Kitch, you are a very sarcastic one aren’t you… I am also a Plus member and think the service is great, I can use my Plus content while the PSN is down. Therefore, my Plus content is functioning, it is only the COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE network which is down.

The network is not included as a price of the PS3. Anyone with AND WITHOUT a PS3 can get a PSN account (via the website) proving, people without a PS3 are not funding it but CAN REGISTER. It is FREE.

        POINT PROVEN.

  2. The lack of updates is a little ‘distant’ of SONY

  3. As annoying as this is for people, it’s making one hell of a news story. Thanks for the updates TSA, keep it up!

    • if you think the psn being down is one hell of a news story then you must lead a very sheltered life. If however, you were being sarcastic then ‘good one’

      • It was intended as sarcasm, yes :P

  4. It’s all over the internet now* – Apparently the PSN main server operates on a grid of linked PS3’s (via OtherOs) and a maintenance noob has accidentally updated the firmware!

    *It isn’t.

    • that would be awesomely ironic. ^_^

    • LoL, if that’s the case they should search Youtube for jailbreak vids and just throw in some CFW.

  5. Go away BBC, you aren’t needed here. The lack of information is however unfair, at least if they kept people updated you guys wouldn’t be as anxious (all of you that use it anyways).

  6. I thought the only reason devs created single player campaigns was for days like these or when your ISP are digging up the roads .
I have been too busy working and if not working then you have to make the most of the sun because we will all be moaning in July “oh what a ***t summer etc ”
On a serious note i have loads of Single player titles barely even touched – Valkyria Chronicles , Bioshock , GTA IV , Red Faction , Killzone 2 , The Saboteur , Fallout 3 (had it over 2 years and yet to break out of the bunker thing !! ) , Virtua Tennis , Mirrors Edge , Pacific Rift, Saints Row 2, Ferrari Challenge and Red Dead Redemption !! All amazing titles and im not past even 5-10% in any of them .

    • So that makes the lack of information ok? I just finished Enslaved. Cracking game. I’m still annoyed about not knowing what is going on.

      • they said 48 hours or so that is whats going on.

      • dan maybe you should’ve put the caps lock on & shouted it, as people don’t seem to be registering your thread
“The latest update on the problem with the PSN states that the issue may take up to two days to resolve fully, and that further updates will be delivered as and when they are received. According to the PlayStation Retail Loyalty Site’s official Twitter account, the problem is in Japan and is currently under investigation.”

  7. Who cares? Lots of services and other things malfunction everyday. It’s just the online on video games ffs.

    • I care, a paying customer.

      • im a paying p+ cust & the only thing p+customers cant do, is make a p+ purchase & perform background dloads.(cloud save)
other than that, other psn services are free.
regardless, they have made the announcement above & i dare say another will follow on sat(uk).

  8. more a SP gaming guy anyways.

  9. I’m one of the guys that got plenty of calls about people not being able to connect. Really, I’ve had better days.

But honestly guys, isn’t this the right time to meet up with real friends iso psn-friends, you know, the kind with real flesh, blood and so on? Allthough I agree with the great Kevin Butler on gaming (his speech), it is “just” gaming.

I wanted to coop Portal 2, but couldn’t. So what? There’s plenty of time left to do that. Just go out and do other stuff. Some of you almost make it look like the world ended. Sad…

  10. You know what annoys me? People telling everyone to “go outside”, as if they have no lives.

People just want to play online. Is it bad for them to complain that they can’t do this? Or complain about the lack of information from Sony about this issue?
