Portal 2 Sells More On 360 Than PS3

Despite claims from Valve (and elsewhere) that the PS3 version of Portal 2 was the best, at least in terms of console versions, it looks like the 360 version has outsold it.

According to trade site MCV, the PS3 version accounts for 35% of UK sales, and the Xbox 360 version 54%. The PC version will obviously be more than is currently being quoted (11%) if you take into account Steam sales.

Whether this has anything to do with the recent PSN downtime is anyone’s guess, but it’s certainly worth mentioning.

Whichever version you went for (if any) Portal 2 is a fabulous game.

  1. Portal is a more established IP on 360/PC that´s why.

  2. I think it’s because PS3 people like me have so many other games to play that they haven’t bought this game yet but you’d think that people would rather buy the PS3 version because you get the PC version for free meaning people who have both the PS3 and 360

  3. As has already been stated, this being the first Valve game to launch on the PS3, wasn’t going to do it any favors. 360/PC have a broad following for it; my brother, father and a friend all have it for PC. They also played the original, and half-life etc… Honestly, for a first run Valve game on PS3, it’s done rather well, all things considered.

  4. I don’t see the big deal, the PS3 has more competing titles out at the moment, including Mortal Kombat (with Kratos exclusive) and SOCOM 4 launching on the exact same day. A victim of it’s own success?

The PS3 version HAS been shown to be the best version of Portal 2 and with all the outstanding reviews I’d say many MANY PS3 owners will pick this up _eventually_. I doubt the fan base for Portal is that much higher on Xbox, sure Orange Box wasn’t as good on PS3 but it was still very playable, and let’s not forget that just because you own a PS3 doesn’t mean you’re not/were a PC gamer with lots of Valve exposure.

I’m in the US at the moment and the Portal 2 advertising has been epic, but doesn’t tend to favour either PS3 or Xbox. Having said that, this is the land of the Xbox so I’ve no doubt it’ll sell higher on that platform here.

  5. If I had both consoles, which I don’t, I’d still buy all multiplatform games on the PS3 simply because my hands fit comfortably around the DualShock 3, unlike the asymmetric monstrosity that is the 360 gamepad.

  6. It only sold more on the 360 because the 360 users were so desperate for a good game that they all went out and bought it /joke

  7. I got it for PS3. And I’m in America. I am however the only person that I personally know (yes I know myself…) that has Portal 2 at all.

    • most of the PS3 owners I no have not bothered with it as well have not got it myself yet.
