Rumours Surface Regarding Cross Game Chat

See the image below? It’s apparently from a SCE spokesperson who’s apparently decided to apparently comment on apparent Cross Game Chat functionality. On Engadget. Apparently.

As hopefully our undertones suggest, we’re not particularly convinced this is the real deal – if it is, we’ll hold our hands up and say ‘fine’ but we’re not sure why a SCE spokesperson would choose to comment on a non-Sony blog.

You’ll see that his latest comment regards Cross Game Chat – that feature that was meant to appear with PlayStation+ but got removed at the last second.  “As we are rebuilding the network,” says the comment, “we are taking into consideration in implementing features such as cross game chat and in-game video chat to name a few.”

“I cannot confirm any new features at this time but expect a massive update when the network is restored.”

You can read some of his other comments here and make your own mind up.

Apparently.

  1. I’m still skeptical of this. I know they’ll have been plugging away at it for the last 5 years, but I simply can’t see where the RAM, CPU power etc. etc. comes from. It’ll have to be taken from the resources allocated to the XMB, which is already a steaming pile when you’re in-game, and the source of probably half of all game crashes I’ve had in the last year.

Then again, a total rewrite of the XMB could eke out the littlest bit more performance and make chat possible…

Cross game video chat though? Don’t make me laugh.

  2. One thing we need to remember is that the PSN was very barebones when it was first set up. It may well be that it’s original design and structure meant it was very difficult to tack on these features previously. It could be that this “opportunity” of rebuilding the network following this hack means they are able to fix some of the infrastructure that has been holding some of these wanted features back…

  3. come on, use your common sense. if they can’t release proper statements on their own website to tell us what’s going on, i really doubt they’ll be posting inside info in the comments section of gadget websites…

  4. Shocked Granny FTW!

  5. I’m not even slightly surprised that these rumours have started. But, like you, I’m not convinced!

  6. CGC one of my least needed features, never understood why so many want it.

    • I don’t care for CGC either

but, CGC itself is nothing without robust party/lobby features

  7. Fake.
CGC is lame. Talking to someone ruins the game experience except when playing in teams online.

Sony you have lost my trust for the PS3. At least know I can start revising for my university exams in a month.

  8. It is of cause possible Sony were planning a big firmware update around E3 with a handful of new features and improved security. They may now bring that forward and tie it to their restructured PSN in an effort to plug the security holes allowing both the hack and custom firmware.

Also this leak will have forced Sony’s hand and a large one off investment in the PSN will be needed to improve security – it may be that this investment allows them to build a far better online infastructure from the ground up allowing new features to be intergrated into the system.

  9. Er… Didn’t I say this the other day? Although I was entirely joking at the time.

However I agree that unless they have optimised and rewritten the xmb, I can’t see where the extra resources come from as from my vague understanding, they don’t have any more resources to give to such functionality.

So in my opinion, possible, but improbable.

  10. I’d rather they just worked harder on getting it back up and running than spent time on jazzy new features, I couldn’t care less about cross game chat, but some free stuff as compensation wouldn’t go amiss once it’s back up
