No Demo Planned For Skyrim

Speaking to Gameplanet, Elder Scrolls V producer Craig Lafferty confirmed that Bethesda won’t be releasing a demo for Skyrim. Due to the sheer depth of the game, its numerous progressive mechanics and free-roam content, Bethesda explains that there is no feasible way to convey the essence of Skyrim via a standalone section.

Can’t wait until November to get your Elder Scrolls fix? Fear not, Bethesda have plans to release a 5th anniversary edition of the previous series instalment, Oblivion which will include both expansions. Be sure to check out written Skyrim preview too.

  1. Didn’t the GOTY edition of Oblivion have both expansions?

    • Should’ve clicked the link. Now I look like a right plonker. :)

  2. Sandbox games are very hard to show off in just a demo. A massive Sandbox RPG is very unlikely to get a demo as the company would have to sacrife the sandbox element and make it linear. I rather have them working on it and ironing out any bugs that they find.

I can’t wait for Skyrim and hopefully they include the radiant AI this time. Eh bethesade?;-) I will have some income by then so i can get this. Damm you November and all you good games.

It would have been nice if for the 5th Anniverasy edition, it included all plugins and DLC that is not avaiable for the PS3. In November, I shall be hunting down dragons. I will be know as Dragonborn.

    • If I could only have one of the great titles this autumn, it would be skyrim, no hesitation. (an estimated 3,000 hours of gameplay:) If only bethesda were licensed, to make a lord of the rings game, but hey, this is good enough.

    • ok I know it isn’t an RPG but the demo for Just Cause 2 was pretty smart. They gave you just enough time to wander around and try a few things but within the time limit, you were not able to get too far on.

Problem with skyrim is for that to work, they would have to switch off main missions, and fast travel. Like you said, quite glad they aren’t bothering with it.

      • The only other way is to restrict it to a premade character and to a very limited area which would not be fun and could put people off it. Although, i do hope they keep releasing new gameplay videos when they can afford to do it.^-^

      • The first Mecenaries game on ps2 did it pretty well too, they just limited you to 1 campaign mission (albeit a big one) with 1 pre-determined character. Gave you a good feel of the openness and the gameplay without overdoing it.

  3. I don’t even wánt a Skyrim. Just give me the full version right away. =P

  4. TBH i’m not dissapointed in this as this wasn’t a game that i ever expected to get a demo. A Sandbox RPG with the size of Skyrim is impossible to put into a demo as the guy said.

  5. Come November, bye bye social life.

  6. No demo needed, it’s going to be epic. I’ve already had too many spoilers, with the e3 demo. I’m still making my way through oblivion(goty ed,) i was late to the party. Although i prefer 1st person view, I can’t wait to see & play a little, of the refurbished 3rd person in skyrim & to catch my first, hands on glimpse of a dragon(dragons, oh my :) I may even have one play through in 3rd person, then 3,000 hrs later in 1st lol(will prob mix it up.) 3rdP just not happing in oblivion, but looks amazing in e3 demo. I love my fpshooters, but skyrim is my most anticipated game, in a quarter of a century.

  7. Does anyone know, if dragons can be used as transportation? Been looking, but so far unable to find confirmation, or a straight out no.

    • I’m thinking no (only guesswork so still no straight out no) since they seem hostile and to get the powers you need to slay them. Wil probs still have the fast travel option to the major cities and any locations discovered.

      • Todd Howard let slip at e3, that not all dragons will be hostile, which opens up the possibility. 11/11/11, will ans this for sure. (one can dream.)

      • Yeah but i doubt a dragon would be happy if it woke up to find someone on it’s back trying to force it to fly. However it would be awesome to ride a dragon. It would be excellent if we could use the dragon we are riding to battle another dragon in flight.:D

      • If it was up to me, dragons would be how fast travel was implemented, not a loading screen.

      • “i doubt a dragon would be happy, if it woke up to find someone on it’s back.” Thats where the travelling dragon shout comes into play.

      • That would be a logical in game explanation for fast travel. I know carriages have been confirmed but i do hope there will be different forms of transport that can act a fast travel. E.g. a boat to get from city to city(if Skyrim has a river that goes from city to city). Also we can start a traven brawl in Skyrim which can be non lethal.:D I shall be starting loads whilst getting drunk in game.(hopefully we can actaully get drunk and have some visual effects to reflect that) I also hope that all the cities won’t be avaible to fast travel at the start of the game as i would be too tempted to go to the nearest city and get drunk and start a massive citywide tavern brawl.:p Dragonborn:taven brawler. Although i don’t want to get attack by a dragon whilst drunk even though it would be funny as hell to see Dragonborn trying to wield his sword and falling over.:D

I do hope they include an option to disable fast travel.

  8. November can’t come quick enough.

  9. Bad move I say in the short run

    • I’d say it would be more of a bad move to release a rubbish demo that doesn’t really represent the game very well.

      • And which would take development time off of the final game, yes demos do have lots of negatives.

    • Not a bad move. How can you release a demo for such a massive game?

Anyway, once they release some good gameplay videos, I think that will please the masses.

  10. As a response to the caption… That’s what she said!

Seriously though, I agree they didn’t release a demo for oblivion, fallout 3 and New Vegas (even if it was by Obsidian). They should just do as they always have and just make sure the game is the best it can be before release.
