It’s a strange old podcast this week. I know, they’re always a bit strange but this one is especially so. Kris couldn’t make it so we needed to find a replacement. Dan is currently predisposed with the creation of life (he’s got a new baby, rather than a Frankenstein-esque experiment) so we turned to our new TSA love interest, Kev.
In between fits of barely-controlled laughter, we managed to talk a little bit about OnLive and Minecraft. We also gave our final verdict on EGX, briefly. Then Lewis talked about Fair Game, Kev told us a bit about Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and I tried desperately to remember the bits of the DC comics reboot that I’d enjoyed this week.
Lewis finished up our bit of the show by talking about Grave Encounters before we did our quiz (supplied by Tuffcub this week) and answered listeners questions.
Kev edited this week too, so don’t blame us if he left in some overly-offensive material.

I am not needy! I was just reminding Peter as he forgot about the questions thread in the forum. He asked me if i wanted to do it on a weekly basis, so i accepted. Usually he puts a link to help direct people to that thread so that they have some questions from the community and to avoid Kris’s inbox being filled with insane emails from some of the TSA regs. ;)

speaking of minecraft, forget the zombies groaning a faintly “brains” sounding grunt, it’s the hiss of the creepers you’ll learn to fear.
they’re practically silent until they’re right behind you and they start that hissing/sizzling sound, and that point you realise you ARE going to die.
compared to those the zombie are a cakewalk.
the skele’s are a pain because they fire arrows at you, though they do drop arrows, handy for when you’ve made a bow.
amd they drop bone which can be crafted into bonemeal which is fantastic for farming.
what you need is a house.

it’s my interpretation of a colonial american style house.
but with stone instead of wood because it’s less likely to be destroyed when creeper inevitably explodes nearby, one blew off half the porch the other day.
seriously though, what kind of evolutionary process would lead to a creature that’s as aggressive as the creeper is, but it’s only method of attack is to kill itself explosively?
what kind of world is minecraft set on where that was the most sucessful of the species were the explosively suicidal?
the green things at the side are cactuses, or is it cacti?
i put them there because they hurt any creatures that get too near them and they keep away, or kill, the creepers that freaked me out every morning by staring at me through my windows.
that was my pretty basic house, if you want to see an impressive minecraft creation look for the mineraft version of lord of the rings.
these guys have created an almost full size version of middle earth.
their moria is freaking huge.
apparently they reached the actual borders of what minecraft could extend to, i didn’t think it had any.
anyway.
the quiz was tough this week.
i got 4.
but most of the others i knew the tunes i just couldn’t think of the names.
are you guys alright though? you didn’t seem yourselves this week.
there was hardly any swearing.
that’s just not like you.
is Kris the actual cause of all the swearing while making it look like he’s trying to stop you guys normally?

anyway, Kev was a great addition to the podcast.
i’d love to see, or hear him regularly on the podcast.
he used to be “That bloke that bloody wins everything”, now he’s “That bloke that bloody wins everything but is pretty funny too”.

Aw thanks for the kind words! Your house is brilliant. Definitely better than my wooden hidey-box. Moria looked great! I’ve not managed to make anything of any size yet. I had quite a cool mountain-side residence, but I have to find it again as I died yesterday!

i’ve found it’s useful to build near where you originally spawn in the world because you can create a compass later but it always points to your original spawn point, so if you build your main home near there you’ll always be able to find it again, once you’ve built a compass at least.
and of course if you die you return to your spawn point, unless you’ve slept in a bed, in which case you spawn next to the bed.
you doo have to make sure you leave enough space above the bed though or the game will consider the bed blocked and it’ll send you back to your original spawn if you die, a two block gap is enough, that’s why most houses tend to have rooms of three blocks high.
my first building in mine craft was basically a 5 by 5 box made of dirt with a door to survive the first night.
i spent the night peering out the windows in the door to see when the sun came up. O_O
for some building ideas, and guidance on the best ways of dying half a mile underground, there’s a really funny minecraft podcast, available on itunes and youtube, called wonderment.
they spend most of it exploring this ENORMOUS cave system.
it’s funny, when you’re playing and you hear the creeper start hissing and the resulting explosion, it’s terrifying, but when you hear it in those videos, for some reason it’s absolutely hilarious.
