PSN Restored, Sharing Dropped To Two

[drop2]As we said a little while back, the PlayStation Network sharing system has been dropped from five accounts down to two as part of yesterday’s PSN downtime.

Also previous purchases and download vouchers will still work with whoever you shared them with, as from today anything you buy or redeem will be locked to just the two machines.

There’s a caveat: it’s two PSPs/Vitas and two PS3s per download, which makes sense.

You can now also deactivate consoles online for the first time, something that previously required access to the console in question which – as you’ll no doubt know if you were in this situation – isn’t always possible.

We assume this will all be welcomed by developers and publishers – “no game-sharing please” said PixelJunk’s Dylan Cuthbert to us once, and he certainly won’t be the only one to lose out to people ‘splitting the cost’ of games.

We’ve also heard rumblings that the – well – er, that’s all off the record.

  1. Just being able to deactivate old ylod systems is worth it! Plus a few years ago my account got hacked & took a couple of activations :(
At least now I can start a fresh, shame they don’t show serial numbers though as that would make this much easier.

  2. I’d just like to confirm that this does work, there’s no teething problems or anything it seems. I deactivated all PS3 systems earlier today and have reactivated my one at home with no problems, all my games and stuff work fine like nothing ever changed. This tool should’ve been available from the start, but hey-ho, it’s here now and it works.

I do think getting rid of the five slots though was a bad move, I don’t understand why they’ve done that. I will eventually have 3 PS3’s in my house, and I don’t fancy paying for any content twice, I don’t think that’s fair.

    • They’ve done it because you are very much in minority (with three PS3s) and this change combats game sharing which developers are not fond of.

      • I get that people having many consoles are in the minority.
I also I get that developers/publishers aren’t fond of gamesharing.
What I don’t get is that gamesharing is a problem so big that they are willing to inconvenience their best customers (3+ consoles = very likely to buy many games) just to try to get a little more money out of their worst customers (gamesharer = limited money or cheap = less likely to buy many games)

    • Thanks for the confirmation that it works, I’m sure many will find this useful to know.

  3. Just deactivated all 11 devices of mine. No idea where most of those were. Will try to reactivate my PS3 when I get home.

    • Managed to activate my PS3 perfectly when I got home. No change whatsoever for me.

  4. What is the benefit of deactivating?

    Sorry if I’m being thick!

    • Means you can activate additional consoles without hitting your limit. If you had one die on you this is the only way to deactivate them.

      • Ah thanks!

So my old PS3 with a busted blu ray drive that I’m gonna sell on ebay, I should probably deactivate it?

  5. Yay! Just deactivated all 3 PS3 accounts, including my american one. Deactivated them all, just to reactivate from my 2 ps3’s now. This is a good idea because i was worried about the 2 old 60gig PS3’s that died on me years ago.

  6. I have 3 ps3’s, the website shows 3 activated consoles, how do I know which two are the ones that are activated for future content and which is only activated for previous content? Also if I deactivate all 3 can I reactivate all 3? Or will only 2 reactivate? It’s a little confusing, thanks.

  7. its very good idea im already on my 4th ps3 so online deactiving is great

  8. what was “We’ve also heard rumblings that the – well – er, that’s all off the record.” referring to? not details, just in general, did i miss something?

  9. Too bad you can’t log in on the website if qriocity is not supported in your country (ie. Poland).
