Rayman Origins Sells Just 50,000 Copies

Rayman Origins is an excellent game. In fact, it’s one of the best games we’ve seen this year – and there’s a lot of contenders. And whilst games like Call of Duty sells millions in a matter of days, Rayman has sold just 50,000 copies across all three platforms since its release four weeks ago – in the US at least.

Origins didn’t even reach the Top 40 chart here in the UK in release week.

So, what’s the reason for the poor sales? Could it be the crowded November release window pushing sales elsewhere, the lack of advertising, or just that disc-based 2D platformers have gone well and truly out of style?

It’s not easy to judge that, but there’s little reason to expect another Rayman game like Origins – at least not a retail game – after this harsh blow.

We reviewed Rayman Origins and thought extremely highly of it – giving it a 9/10, describing it as “ultimately a step forward from the genre” and saying that it “puts Sonic in his place”. However, Sonic did much better, managing to chart in the top 10 in the UK chart.

  1. I will buy it after Xmas :) Looks awesome!

  2. Lots of contenders that it’s gone up against and Joe public currently believes 2D = download, cheap or handheld title.

  3. Lack of advertising + release in Triple A November = Epic Fail.

It’s already £25 in Game, I’ll buy it in the January sales, by which time the studio that put all their time, effort and energy into this title will already be dissolved (just look at this year…)

  4. it always looked like more of a downloadable title, with price to match, than a full price retail title.

and expecting people to pay 48 quid for it on the psn was just ridiculously optimistic on ubisoft’s part.

    • Not really, the game has a great deal of content and work put into it, so don’t dismiss it as a downloadable title just because most platformers these days are. Like Mario and Sonic it deserved a retail release, and Sonic shouldn’t technically even deserve that anymore.

  5. and how many hundreds of thousands of people are buying pretend shrubs for some stupid fecking garden or virtual weapons for a make-believe gang on Facebook?
For shame, gaming world, FOR SHAME!

    • Shows two things:

      1. Nobody cares about a 9/10 review from us.
      2. Nobody cares about takeovers on trade sites.

      :(

  6. The fact that that crappy Sonic game has sold more makes me want to smash my head into a wall.

    • Heyheyhey, the PC version was pretty good, although this game honestly seems to deserve more.

  7. The demo didn’t quite help so sell it. At least not to me.

  8. Too expensive? What the?! It’s a great game so should be full price. Try telling the developers who put all the time and effort into making the game that it’s not good enough to be considered a full price game. People don’t expect Mario games to be discounted. I got the plat trophy last night for it and it’s definitely not a small game. Maybe compared to skyrim it is, but I’ve put more hours into it then battlefield and MW3. RANT!!!

  9. This is why developers should not crowd out the release dates into such a short time frame. There’s just so many games out there all at the same time, if it had a quieter release point, I’m sure it’d have done better. For me, I’ve just see it at £22 and now will be getting it.

  10. Still waiting to buy this until the psvita version comes out :).
