According to Sony’s Kaz Hirai, the company won’t be announcing any new hardware at E3 this year.Â
Referring to a comment from Andrew House, Hirai said he was “absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3.”
“I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that,” he added.
This flies in the face of recent resolute claims to the contrary, which – if Sony are to be believed – are also looking to be off target on similar claims about a new Xbox.
Industry analyst Michael Pachter said recently that Microsoft don’t plan to show anything new this year.
Of course, there’s a big difference between not planning to reveal anything and what might actually happen.
If Microsoft do show a new console at E3 we reckon Sony will do the same, like they did with Kinect and the Move tech demo.
Either that, or Sony are gearing up for a Tokyo Game Show announcement, or some other non-E3 venue.

Thought so. As imo it’s too early for a PS4 to be announced due to the PS3 being in it’s prime. However i can see it being announce within a few years. :)

I am sure ‘if’ MS show anything new at E3 for next-gen, SONY will have something ready to show(maybe a Video of KZ4 etc etc) LOL + SONY has to fight MS ‘AND’ the internet media next gen to, which is unfair(like this gen) Oh well.

a new Littlebigplanet video… in a 3D world of death and peril.
Pfft who needs Killzone 4.

It’ll be either too late or too early I don’t really know how long this gen will last but I hope it takes a year, new hardware is a plus but I hope they don’t lose the spirtual essence of gaming… and not go for an media/motion route.
In the end the PC surpasses the console’s multiplat games (if lucky) are less buggy than console counterparts, I’ve really grown tired of consoles… needs some spark to bring back the joy and excitement…. like a RPG with Monsters…. and crafting..

Such a shame. For me personally the end of 2012 would be perfect for the new consoles to release, it doesn’t look like that’ll happen.
My money’s on Q3/4 2013 release.

God, I hope they don’t show anything new.

You can’t take this kind of thing at face value. It’s something you simply don’t announce if you’re still trying to grow your existing platforms, or you affect investor confidence, cut out the bottom of your market etc.
You also don’t admit to creating a new platform just before you wrap up the launch of something. It would be totally foolhardy to announce the PS4 when fans are already on the fence as to whether to buy that platform or not. They would start putting that money to one side and wait for the home console at a point where they need early buyers.
Similarly, it’d be silly for them to announce the PS4 this year at E3 when they really need to focus very hard on expanding the Vita lineup. This is something that Nintendo was criticised for last year with the WiiU announcement, but for them the Wii was well beyond its peak, so it was a necessary move. Here the PS3 just about has the legs to go a while longer as the lead console.
Finally, it’s about timing. ND will need at least 2 years to be even vaguely close to hitting a launch window. Similar things can be said for Guerilla Games, Sucker Punch and plenty other developers, some of whom might actually like to have a crack at a Vita game too… That’s before we get on to talking about 3rd parties and trying to launch not so far away from Microsoft’s next effort…
So it’d be a bit of a crazy choice to talk PS4 at E3. BUT, you honestly can’t say that they won’t, no matter what…

I read that as “If we were to announce any new PS4 hardware at E3 we’re not going to spoil the surprise by telling you now are we?”
And anyway they could issue a press release the day before E3 announcing something and then _showing_ it at E3 if they’re afraid of breaking their word (not that I think they are)

Snap, I thought the same when I read it :)
I was hoping for a PS3 console refresh with more ram, but with the PS4 looming who would buy it?
Awayze
It’s too early for a PS4. PS3 had a slower start compared to PS1 and PS2. E3 2013 would be the time to show and 2014 a release date.

Sure it’s possible to show something new, but why would either company want to? Microsoft and (especially) Sony spent an awful lot of money to get to the point where these systems have a comfortable profit margin and programmers know what to do with them. Personally I own both, think they’re awesome, and don’t think anyone in the industry wants to move on.
