Capcom Defends SFxTekken On Disc DLC Characters

It’s official, Capcom left 12 characters on the SFxTekken disc to be unlocked as paid DLC when the Vita version launches later this year.

Should we be outraged by this? According to Capcom, no.

In an official statement, Capcom has revealed the rationale behind locking out Blanka, Sakura, Guy, Cody, Dudley and Elena from SF and Alisa, Bryan, Christie, Jack, Lars and Lei on the Tekken side:

“The character information and files were intentionally included on retail versions of the PS3 and Xbox 360 game to save hard drive space and to ensure for a smooth transition when the DLC is available, allowing players who choose not to purchase the content the ability to play against players that did.

“More specifics regarding pricing, dates and other additional exciting DLC plans for Street Fighter X Tekken will be shared at a later date. As a reminder, the retail version of the game will be the only disc-based version consumers will need to own and all future upgrades will come from post-launch DLC.”

Brelston from Capcom Unity followed up the statement with his own clarification on Capcom’s point of view, stating that the move furthered the company’s “desire” to avoid a ‘Super’ version of the game down the line:

“SFxT has a ton of content on day one, then later this year we reenergize the whole thing with a hefty DLC update, without the need for a second disc. And while pricing details are still to come, I can at least say it’ll be a great value considering the size of the update – 12 new characters is pretty substantial, after all.”

  1. I’m starting to wonder if Capcom hate the consumer. Bionic Commando had DRM on the PSN, RE5 had the multiplayer mode as DLC and yet again they go for more on disc DLC as it lcearly benefits the guy that buys the game day one.

Well done Capcom, I’m glade I haven’t bought any of your games new this generation

  2. I don’t buy this (the game or the excuse)

  3. There’s a large selection of characters available to play with straight away, so I don’t see the problem here.
    Saves HDD space and bandwith.
Capcom paid developers to make the extra characters, and expect to be paid for the extra characters.

Although it’s not really DLC, additional content would be a better name. Although the unlock codes would be downloadable I suppose…
    Simple.

    • Woops.
That ‘Simple’ should be on the fourth line of my comment.

  4. They can sugarcoat it all they want. I don’t like it and I won’t have it. No sale.

  5. Bullcrap. They just want us to pay to unlock stuff on the disc. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TO UNLOCK THINGS ON THE FECKING DISC! If you ordered a bag of chips and a sausage but the chippy took out some times and asked you to pay for the rest, you would be pissed off.

Capcom, i may buy Resi 6 preowned just to spite you. Oh, and i won’t even touch SFtekken due to this.

    • Don’t even touch Res Evil 6… touch something else… eh its rival

  6. So basically rather than do what they did with SF4 and release a new disc version 6 months later, they’re just going to put all the content on the disc from day one and then charge you probably not far short of the new disc cost to get to play it.

I’m not normally one to complain about DLC and I actually buy a hell of a lot of it, but this is really bad because they have literally put the finished game on the disc and then locked half of it for a few months so they can charge you again to play it later.

I really hope people vote with their wallets and vote towards a unanimous “fuck you Capcom”!

  7. “I can at least say it’ll be a great value considering the size of the update– 12 new characters is pretty substantial, after all.”

If these was new characters created after the disc went gold, fair enough.
People are angry due to the fact they are charging for stuff on the disc and passing it off as DLC

  8. They locked out Blanka? That game doesn’t deserve the name “Street Fighter” if Blanka is not included from day 1.

    • I agree with you, without Blanka it’s not SF…

  9. Good thing i didn’t buy SF x T, I’ve been looking forward to it since it was revealed, but now Capcom wants us to pay something that already belongs in the disc?! I’ve lost faith in Capcom now…No thank you Capcom!

  10. you think that’s bad?
actually so do i, but that’s not as lo as they’ll go.

never underestimate the depths to which greed will make this industry stoop to.

greed is going to bring this industry down.

and lately, i’m beginning to doubt that would actually be a bad thing.

this industry is stuck so far up it’s own arse lately it could brush it’s teeth from the inside.
