Over in San Francisco, GDC continues to rumble along with its usual trickle of interesting titbits of information. In this instance, it’s the latest show of force from Quantic Dream. The Heavy Rain developers aren’t shy of showing off some amazing tech demos, anyone that remembers the renders and target videos for the detective thriller will remember.
This seven minute demo, entitled “Kara”, is running in real time on a PlayStation 3 and looks incredible. Of course, the fact that they can make the console run a quick demo like this is no indication that it could cope with this sort of output for a full game but we can dream, right?
David Cage has told Eurogamer that the demo was ready a year ago but is still only using about 50 per cent of the capabilities of the engine. It has also been confirmed that the next Quantic Dream game will be a Sony exclusive, although we’ll have to wait a while for more details of that.

great video.
the engine looks good and all, but i really want to know what happens to Kara.
for me the tech isn’t that interesting, what interests me is that Cage is trying to convey emotions in the games that don’t solely revolve around hating your enemy and wanting to kill them.
anyway, i wonder if the game will explore similar themes, like what if mankind created sentient machines, how would that effect us? what would life be like for them?
maybe even questions about our sense of identity.
whatever it is, i’ll be interested in it because of who is developing it.

Likewise, tech demo or not that was an intriguing start to a story and I’d be interested in seeing/playing it. Speaking of which, I really need to go back and platinum Heavy Rain with Move sometime.

That is very impressive, i honestly thought the PS3 wasn’t capable of what i’ve just seen. And that’s just half of the engine’s potential. I wonder if it will be simular to Heavy Rain?

Fantastic demo, the animations and textures are simply incredible. I really wonder how this will translate into a game and how it will compare to this demo visually. It certainly seems like they’ve got an emotional and interesting story coming our way.

Gepetto got fed up of making little boys. This looks amazing cant wait Heavy Rain still one of the best PS3 games i have ever played i know this is only a tech demo but cant wait to see what they have planned.

Gepetto never got fed up of making little boys, he just had all he needed in Pinnocchio!
Didn’t you ever wonder why he made pinocchios nose grow to that sort of size when he lied??
They used to play ‘call my bluff’ all the time… Just the two of them.

the facial expressions were great, so real. I felt for her when she was getting taken apart.

Looks really good, I can’t wait to see the game this influences.

That’s….impressive. On both a technological and storytelling setting.

That could be a brilliant game from them :P Hopefully they are lying & that is the beginning of their new game! ! ! :P

Why would they lie about it being a demo? I’m pretty sure if it was the begining of the game, they would show some gameplay and reveal the new title as i don’t think Kara will be the title used for the finished game.
Kreisash
Well if they gained enough interest in it then it could well turn into a game.
As for it being the title, it could well be a possibility – like one where you meet a ‘Kara’ who is different (like iRobot) and your adventures in the city with her helping her escape or something like ICO. However, give the game morally different options that affect the games outcome, these could be affected by how Kara interacts with you, pleading her humanity and for you to help her.
Still, very impressive demo and great animation. If it’s running real time them it would only be useful in a game where the scale is set so you can appreciate the subtleties in the facial animation.

cool tech demo, shame they didn’t use Rockstar’s MotionScan for lip-synching, woulda been even more awesome!
