Gaikai’s Streaming – Does This Mean No PS4?

So it’s pretty much confirmed that Sony and Gaikai are going to team up at E3, and that rang a not terribly distant bell in my head.

Let’s skip a few months back to January this year and to a CES panel at which Nanea Reeves, chief product officer for Gaikai, made one heck of a prediction. To be fair, we wrote it off, but we might have been very, very wrong to do so.

“Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation,” said Reeves, “that will be the big news at E3.”

Now, it all makes sense. Presumably Gaikai and Sony were working on some kind of streaming service back in January, so were Gaikai privy to Sony’s future plans? Is Reeves going to be proved very right in just a few days time.

And here’s the real question: will there be actually be a PlayStation 4?

  1. I don’t see there being no PS4. Streaming added to PS3, perhaps. There are already rumours of the PS4 codename anyway.

    But if it were to be true, I would quite possibly cry.

    I’ve tried OnLive, and I can say quite categorically that streamed gaming is absolutely not for me.

  4. Sony not releasing a PS4 is stupid on their part, although I think it will actually be pretty good only having 1 main console from MS, no more exclusives (Except for the Wii U) and no more fanboys! Doubt it will happen though, Sony aren’t that stupid are they?

  5. Gaikai specialise in trials & relationships with the publisher to later buy their products.

    It wouldn’t take much to disable the time limits though & deliver games this way & considering how little money Sony have got to inject money into another unit it could be that the PS4 is actually a PS3 minus the disc drive & AAA AAAA games are delivered by streaming & your everyday average AA or indie is delivered via digital download.

    Great news if true, would be great to get off the hardware cycle & let them worry about that server-side.

    • Only problem I have is that I can’t stream in HD… Well, Netflix and their amazing tech can, but no other service does (i-i-ii–buffering–i–iPlayer, OnLive, YouTube)

    • they just bought EMI for 2.3 billion sure they have some spare change for the PS4.

      • For something that makes money? Yes. For something that cost them billions to develop & billions to support over its life? Not a certainty.

      • Wasn’t the Playstation brand the only one that actually made Sony money in the last fiscal year? If so then they would be incredibly stupid to abandon that market segment in the next generation…

      • I believe the group of division Sony jumbled together in Networked Products (or something) turned a profit… but to cover billions of losses of development and its first 3 or 4 years… It probably never will

    • I have said it before & i’ll say it again – If PS4 is stream only, i’m out.

      • It won’t be, Gaikai do streamed full game trials. The full game beyond the trial would be downloaded &/or retail.

      • Heh – I think when a post is removed from the article it tends to mess with the order of things a touch – It’s clearer by teh time posted what order things should go in, but it does mess with peoples heads (namely mine!)! XD

    Devs already confirmed making games for ps4 so how can this be true?
