Gaikai’s Streaming – Does This Mean No PS4?

So it’s pretty much confirmed that Sony and Gaikai are going to team up at E3, and that rang a not terribly distant bell in my head.

Let’s skip a few months back to January this year and to a CES panel at which Nanea Reeves, chief product officer for Gaikai, made one heck of a prediction. To be fair, we wrote it off, but we might have been very, very wrong to do so.

“Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation,” said Reeves, “that will be the big news at E3.”

Now, it all makes sense. Presumably Gaikai and Sony were working on some kind of streaming service back in January, so were Gaikai privy to Sony’s future plans? Is Reeves going to be proved very right in just a few days time.

And here’s the real question: will there be actually be a PlayStation 4?

  1. BOOM.

    • I win teh internetz

      • “So it’s pretty much confirmed that Sony and Gaikai are going to team up at E3”

I hate to be ‘that guy’ but that just isn’t true yet. It may not be Sony. They may just be showcasing themselves etc.

      • Stay tuned for further developments :)

      • Apart from the fact that people in the know have leaked that Sony will be teaming up with a big name player in cloud gaming, which means it’s either OnLive or Gaikai… Seeing as OnLive are happy going their own way & Gaikai specialise in full game trials and increasing sales… I’d say it’s a sure bet it’s Gaikai

      • when you get that look TC i get the feeling you know more than you’re letting on.

      • As I said.. stay tuned….

      • TC, you’re such a tease.

      • Sony: “WE BUY GAIKA!!!” ?

        Or…

“And here’s the real question: will GAIKAI actually be a PlayStation 4?” ?

  2. Oh God no…

    • If true, Microsoft have already won the next generation…

      • Ho have they won the next generation?

      • From Sony not releasing a competitor perhaps?

      • Just simply, how many people do you know that can stream these games at HD resolution with no lag? I certainly can’t

      • I can’t stream them either and besides i don’t think i would ever buy games like this maybe if it was something like you pay a monthly subscription and you get to play all the games they have but not buy. If they have to go digital i’d rather take the download option at least that way you get the game

      • Well most of the people I know would have no problem at all to stream games in HD with no lag. But I don’t no how fast the internet is in the UK so might be different over their.

      • Imagine if Sony are revealing the PS4 at E3 and this big cloud announcement is that people will be able to play PS4 demos on the PS3…

        Yeah, I can dream.

      • a streaming only ‘PS4’ would be a definite ‘no’ for me, I just don’t have the bandwidth to support it. I gave OnLive a try a while ago but the overall picture quality is noticeably sub-HD (which just doesn’t work for games designed to be displayed in HD – couldn’t read text on the screen, or see opponents in the distance)

I do hope that game streaming is just going to be an optional feature of the PS4

  3. Wowee. That’s pretty big news!

  4. If that’s true, Sony is backing the wrong horse.

Sony couldn’t be that stupid. I hope.

    • It would eclipse all of their other cock-ups in one swell foop.

  5. Oh shit, I think I know what’s happening now.

  6. I always thought of that quote as saying a streaming competitor would kill off home consoles, but that makes so much sense if true.

  7. 2+2=5 Maybe? Yes? No? [Head Explodes…]

  8. I think it’s a bit to early to have streaming gaming. Sure here in Sweden it would not be a problem at all sense we have great internet here but alot of other people don’t have that.

  9. Streaming will be used to stream demos to PS3s, there will be a PS4 and everyone is overreacting.

    • Isn’t that a little pointless for what is supposedly a large partnership? o_O

      • Or full games to PS3’s? Which could tie into the potential PS+ bombshell?

      • Oops, just saw Peter’s article suggesting the same, serves me right for not keeping my eyes pealed on TSA every second of the day.

  10. :O
