EA Officially Confirms Battlefield Premium

EA has officially confirmed the existence of Battlefield Premium, which will cost $50 a year.

Battlefield 3 has sold 15 million units since launch, and EA made $1.2 billion in revenue from digital services. EA also confirmed that Battlefield Premium will save players $25 than if they bought the content separately.

We’d expect more details to be announced during the course of E3.

Update: The Reuters article has been amended and no longer mentions that this is $50 per year, just that it’s $50. We assume the price leaked by the PSN last week will apply in the UK – £39.99. EA’s official announcement of the service at E3 stated that it went live immediately on PS3 and would land next week on Xbox 360 and PC. It gives access to five DLC packs as well as offering events and extra strategy videos.

  1. The patch is already out which contains details of premium.

  2. A year? Is that right?

The sign-up thing on my PS3 (post-patch) says it’s a one-off payment not an annual subscription.

  3. Patch suggests £25, which isn’t really such a bad conversion rate. And as I would be buying the remaining DLC anyway, it seems a bit of a no-brainer to buy it.

  4. $50 a year. For this? I call shenanigans.

    • It is. The original Reuters article has just been altered. It no longer mentions “$50 a year”, only a one-off fee of $50.

  5. $50 per year??? Or a once off price of $15 per DLC pack if buying the DLC separately? After two years, it will be $100… That equals more than 6 DLC packs… which there aren’t…

  6. So you would end up paying £90ish for both Live and this if you choose to do so. Rip off imo as premium doesn’t offer enough content to justify the £50 per year imo. In fact, i can buy several games for that price.

    • for some people it’s a bargain, I’m sure people will get more hours of a £40 add on than the next new 8-10 hour campaign that costs £40 on release.

      do you play battlefield?

      • I’ve only played BF:BC 1&2. Played the beta of BF3. I refuse to get BF3 due to EA’s questionable practices and the massive patches. I can see why people would pay £40 for it but for me, not worth the price.

  7. So with Premium is the DLC free with it or do you just get it early and still have to buy it seperately? Does anyone know?

    • From my understanding the DLC is included in the price. Which makes BF Premium a bargain for those buying all the DLC.
If you take the 4 new DLC packs (excluding Karkand) at the price of £11.99 (cost of Karkand, so assuming the map pack price remains the same) =£47.96. Becomes even more of a bargain if you have dont already have Karkand.
The strategy guides are bit of a joke though considering the lack of any proper online instruction in the first place. Part of the reason online is so frustrating is no one uses the equipment etc, which is probably due to the fact your never told what anything does or how to use it.

  8. As much as I love BF3, I’m not sure I can justify the cost of this, although I really want all the DLC. Hmmm decision time.
