Xbox Live App Adds Console Controls

The My Xbox Live app on iOS has been updated. The new update adds the ability to control certain elements of your Xbox 360 console using your smartphone. Apparently you can control media playback and Bing with it. I’ve tried but I’m running the developer beta of iOS 6 and the new My Xbox Live app is clearly not happy about that – it keeps crashing.

The update also adds Retina support for the new iPad, although the new console control functions don’t seem to be present for that platform.

They also finally released an Android build of the app but it seems to be an older version, lacking these new features for the time being.

It looks like the promise of SmartGlass is already starting to filter into Microsoft’s mobile offerings in a small way, we would expect a lot more of this when SmartGlass arrives this autumn.

  1. I’m really looking forward to this smartglass feature. I already use the My Xbox Live app quite a bit. Hopefully it’s as easy to use as they say.

  2. This app sounds like the one that’s been out for ages on Windows phones. But it’s nice to see this come out of other phones now, it does seem to be the first part of rolling out Smart Glass.

    • it’s been out on iOS for ages too but only with friends lists and all that guff. The update adds media controls, has WP7 had that for a while?

      • Im a WP7 user and yeah ive been able to use my phone as a type of controller when watching movies and listening to music, nice to see other phones getting the ability to do so but its something MS should of left on windows phone only

      • Yeah I thought it was something that should of been a Windows phone exclusive but since they want/need Smart Glass to be multi-platform then it makes sense to make it the same on all phones.

  3. Where my phone.
    Where my keys.

  4. This story has really brightened my day. Not because I am at all interested in the app or even Smart Glass but because of what someone wrote over on Joystiq. They wrote “I was waiting for this app. I’m finally able to chat with my friends on my phone.” I really hope for their sake they were being ironic.
