According to Eurogamer, Trion Worlds has confirmed that Rift’s first major expansion, Storm Legion, will also come bundled with a copy of the original game.
Though not as common nowadays with the advent of DLC and the free-to-play scene, disc-based expansions have certainly left their mark on the MMO genre. The ever-popular Blizzard powerhouse, World of Warcraft, will soon be celebrating its fourth boxed expansion with Mists of Pandaria later this year.
The motives behind Trion’s decision are clear. Rift may have been a critical success, though as with any subscription-based MMO, it’s had a hard time retaining post-launch install base. Offering a free copy of Rift with Storm Legion really opens the doors for new players to explore what is a well-defined entry to the genre. Veterans of Telara aren’t being left out however, Trion Worlds promising a discount on the expansion for those who already own Rift.
