What We Played #59: Mass Effect 3, Lollipop Chainsaw, Spec Ops

Last weekend’s Operation Savage in Mass Effect 3 led myself and three friends to spend a lot of hours in Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer. Between us we didn’t rack up anything like the seven million kills one of us had at one point thought possible(!) but our combined kill total over the weekend was somewhere north of ten thousand which I don’t think is all that bad.

We played another couple of hours during the week and that’s been pretty much all the gaming I’ve done as my week’s been pretty messed up for various reasons. There has been literally just a couple of games of Treasures of Montezuma Blitz on my PS Vita, and a half hour of solo Rock Band 3 to help me unwind last night.

Josh has finished up his Hard and collectibles run through Batman: Arkham Asylum this week and has got going on Arkham City, “which would be much easier if the damn ‘online pass’ code in [the] box actually worked”.

On the portable front his PS Vita is seeing plenty of gravitationally-challenged action in the “brilliant and unique” Gravity Rush and having picked up Unit 13 in the recent PlayStation Store sale he has played through the first few stages of that.

Playing the sugar-coated and blood-soaked Lollipop Chainsaw we find Tuffcub. He’s also been blinking the sand out of his eyes in Spec Ops: The Line and lastly playing with some decks as he prepares for some DJing next week, the first time he’s publicly taken to the decks for a few years.

Peter has got his hands on Skyrim’s Dawnguard expansion:

I’m a vampire that can turn into a flock of bats. It’s all a bit weird, given that I played Skyrim mostly as a combat game rather than a magical one. I kept fire on my left hand and a one-handed weapon on my right. Now I’m dual wielding magic and flying around. It’s taking a little bit of getting used to.

When not vamping it up he’s been playing the PSN’s Dungeon Twister which is “a complex turn-based strategy game based on the board game of the same name”. Failing one of the game’s tutorial levels half a dozen time before taking a break has left Peter wondering “if it’s really difficult or if [he’s] just quite bad at it”.

Newly 360’d-up Aran has exposed himself (not like that!) to some of this gaming generation’s best shooters. He’s enjoying the original Gears of War, has played a bit of the Halo 3 campaign which is yet to grab him and has been scoring a few lucky kills in Halo: Reach’s multiplayer, somehow managing to avoid any abusive messages.

Fable 2 has also seen quite a few hours of play where his Eastenders-with-magic-like existence is summed up thusly: “I’ve become an expert blacksmith, twice married, twice divorced and I own 3 homes. Oh and I accidentally set some town folk on fire.”

Alex has had something of a mixed gaming week in respect to platforms and experiences:

I played a bit of Lollipop Chainsaw and thought it was alright in a kind of “this isn’t Mad World and I wish it was” kind of way. It’s deliberately trashy but almost unplayably silly and rather too rude for pre-watershed gaming.

I also played some LittleBigPlanet on Vita, which was splendid.

I wanted to play some iPad games but couldn’t be bothered wrestling with whatever Apple have done with iOS 6 and decided to just sit in silence staring at the walls instead.

Last but not least we come to Kris’ gaming adventures, at least if civil engineering can be considered an adventure. He’s been playing SimCity Social on Facebook. “Whilst the timings for refresh on resources aren’t great”, he tells us, “it’s got that core SimCity gameplay that’s so appealing”. His overall verdict is that ultimately it just makes him want to get his hands on a real SimCity game again.

Have you been providing viral advertising gaming on a marketing platform Facebook or played any real games this week?

  1. Finished AC: Revelations at the weekend and not played much since then (apart from a few missions on Unit 13 – still struggling with the timed missions) because I’ve been wondering what to get next. In the end I went for Max Payne 3, so that’s what I’ll be playing next week too.

  2. On Vita I platinumed Gravity Rush, which (currently) happens to be a TSA Fastest :D
I have also made a start on the WipEout 2048 DLC….the visuals seem (from memory) to be greatly improved from the PS3 version and as such looks wonderful! Not sure if it was in the update or part of the DLC, but the original 2048 ships now have another skin you can select, which seem nice and bright – makes a nice change!

Not much on PS3. Some DiRT 3 – the Cat n Mouse meet on Monday was great fun, sadly my trophy nemesis MJB couldn’t make it but I enjoyed playing with 2 new attendees! Next Monday should be a riot! I also (finally) finished all the single player events so just need to reach multiplayer level 35 for my DiRT 3 platinum! I also played more Sniper Elite V2 co-op but unfortunately missed the opportunity to help freeze receive his platinum. Will hopefully get my last 4 Bomb Runs completed tonight to finish off the co-op/multiplayer trophies!

  3. Finished off my first play through of Lollipop Chainsaw, platinumed Lego Batman 2 and started playing The Amazing Spiderman. I’ve also been playing Zen and Marvel pinball in between those.

    • How is Spiderman shaping up mate. Feel free to compare to Spidey 2 if necessary! :)

      • Sorry, that was actually supposed to be a question, but it seems i have changed the rules so that questionmarks are no longer required!

      • Seems pretty good so far (about 6 hours in, maybe 40% of the story complete). It doesn’t feel quite as good as Spiderman 2 , but it’s still good. There’s also a decent amount of side quests to do, with a few popping up after each story mission.

      • Dammit, you were supposed to say it was pants to stop me from buying it!!

        Urge to spend rising, rising…

        Thanks anyway though mate. :)

  4. I’m currently waiting for y Mgs vita, I hate amazon you would think they do their job right!!

Anyway been playing Some game on ps3 called stranger something, I don’t know how I got it but I turned my ps3 & had free games on there. Not a lot of gaming this week.

    • My copy of MGS is here but I know it’s gonna be a huge time killer, so I refuse to start it until I’ve completed the DLC for Gravity Rush and WipEout 2048!!

      • Lool I’m just excited for it to come, even though I have Mgs on ps3. I might play some wipeout while I wait for it to arrive.

See you now yeh I don’t even look at your trophies anymore, it hurts looking at your trophies. I don’t know how but I accidently looked at your trophies & a tear rolled down my eyes in pain the platinums. Ain’t you got a kid for you to be playing games!!!!! Lol

      • Ha ha, I do have a young lad, but as he’s only 20 months old he has a nap Saturday and Sunday daytimes, and my wife works 3 evenings a week (the boy is sleeping) – so I get a reasonable amount of time to play with him and to play PS3/Vita! :D My trophies are nothing compared to some on TSA, although I’ve only been really collecting in the last year.

      • Lol well you are a hard worker, I ain’t never seen someone put in so much work in their trophies like you do. I only platinumed the game I love & easy ones lol.

But I think I’m losing interest in gaming, I have so many games but they gathering dust. The vita is the most used gaming platform for me right now.

      • I do have a bit of OCD, and I’m more bothered about getting 100%’s than Platinums, lol. As my son gets older I know I’ll play less and maybe just have a Vita (or similar) since it’s far more convenient, especially for short burts ;)

  5. Well, a pretty unproductive week this week;

Monday – Was supposed to do DJ Hero. Didn’t. Fail

    • Hmm, not sure why that posted without me actually clicking ‘post’, but hey-ho! :S

What i was trying to say was:

      Well, a pretty unproductive week this week;

Monday – Was supposed to do DJ Hero. Didn’t. Fail
Monday – Played a bit of Max Payne 3 in the meet. Did terribly badly. Fail
Tuesday – Played in the Showdown tournament. Did terribly badly. Fail
Thursday – Played about an hour of Lego Harry Potter. That was about it.

      Yeah, go me! :/

      • On the plus side your cat didn’t eat any plastic, right? ;)

      • Not that i am aware of. That doesn’t necessarily mean he didn’t though!

Just need to keep an eye out for ‘pre-wrapped’ poos i guess! :)

      • Oh & i meant to mention that he doesn’t have Plus – He finds it hard to operate the dualshock with his paws, so all those free games just aren’t for him i’m afraid! ;P

      • Then get him Cat of Duty, Paws of Persia, The kitty scrolls:Skyrim, Mousearies,Cat Age:Origins, Final Catasy 7 etc..

  6. Played quite a bit. Rang the second bell of awakening in Dark Souls after defeating Qualeg. Now Im stuck on it again, keep getting owned by every boss I encounter, Moon butterfly, Sif the wolf, Stray Demon and a Hydra all destroyed me. Add those with a few silly deaths like rolling off a cliff and you can tell im very frustrated at the game!
Then Ive been playing InFamous 2 and FoB, completed the latter this morning. Which was good fun, as you can glide as a flock of bats! Looking forward to playing more of Infamous 2 now.
Bought myself Battlefield 3. Not impressed with the single player as of yet. Multiplayer though is brilliant. Really enjoying it, up to level 7 now. Still havent got to grips with the jets yet though, I crash every time I fly them. More of a on the ground kind of person on it.
Also have been going back to the PS1, playing a lot of Crash team racing, great fun in split screen.

    • Come join us on BF3 tonight if you are available! :)

      • my origin account was messed up so couldnt join the clan or something. Dont know how it works. Will try and be on!

      • Yeah, don’t worry about that – I can’t get into battlelog right now, as i don’t have fecking Internet Explorer 9, so have been blocked by the application!!

& as i visit from work, it isn’t like i can upgrade it myself or anything, so unless they relax who can view it, i can likely never get in again! :O

But you don’t need to be part of the clan to join in the fun mate – The only stipulation i have is that you are online sometime between 9pm & around 1/2am. If you are, shoot me a message & i’ll invite you to chat etc. :)

      • oo cool, wont be on for the following two weeks: family meal and holiday but will be keen to be a regular at the meet from then.

  7. Carried on with my Arkham City replay and a bit of FIFA.

  8. This week I finally platinumed Wipeout 2048! Which was good, and made a start on its dlc. Finally picked up gravity rush which is great, bar one mission which I thought was dull as!
ps3 wise its been lego batman 2,strangers wrath and I started my epic journey on final fantasy XII 2.I’m currently waiting on my won copy of lollipop chainsaw :)

    • You know when you play strangers wrath, does it lag?

      • No I haven’t had that issue,I’m not very far in though.

  9. The Mrs picked up a copy of Lego Batman 2 on Friday so we have been playing that on and off for a lot of the week. Nice little game overall with some hilarious voice acting and tonnes to do. As is always the case with the Lego games a few things hold it back but it’s still money well spent overall.

My copy of Lollipop Chainsaw also arrived on Friday so I played through that over the weekend. The combat is a little basic but otherwise the game is great, with a silly narrative, fantastic soundtrack and array of fun minigames. Can’t imagine I will hold on to it for long mind unless I decent to do a second playthrough.

I also finally got chance to check out the Walking Dead demo and actually really enjoyed it. Love the visual style and the decision making aspect is really cool. At 400ms points an episode I may need to pick this up :)

Lastly I’ve been continuing my playthrough of the Metal Gear HD collection. Finished MGS2 last night so I may finally start MGS3 this weekend, something I’ve been meaning to do since the game first came out on the PS2!!

  10. I have played far too many games!
Been playing Max Payne 3 Multiplayer and Batman: Arkham City New Game + and Challenges. Reached Payne Multiplayer Level 50 and Finally Platinum Batman: Arkham City today! Also had a quick go on Skyrim…. for an hour =( but I will go back to it soon. Complete Lollipop Chainsaw last week or whenever that was. )I almost forgot what day it is you know….)
Just installed Spec Ops: The Line 5 mins ago and about to start after this post.
Also Updated Uncharted Black Market as I only need 6 bounties to collect for my Platinum No. 125
Also played Modnation, Mortal Kombat and Everybod’s Golf on Vita.
Also downloaded Unit 13 and waiting for Skibadee to play co-op.
