Activision have announced what we were rumouring this morning – they are bringing Call of Duty Online exclusively to Chinese game players.

The game has been in development for two years, according to the press release, and is being operated by Tencent, as we suspected. The game is free-to-play and monetised through the sales of in-game items.

“We are very excited about our relationship with Tencent and the opportunities for gaming in China,” said Activision’s Bobby Kotick. “We think China is one of the most exciting places in the world for us to grow our business and to develop innovative new games.”

According to the CEO, Tencent has a “terrific track record of customer-focused innovation and deep market knowledge” that Activision will leverage as they build games for this market.

“We look forward to laying the foundation for a long-standing relationship with Tencent and to launching a new and unique experience for fans,” he added.

  1. Call of Duty Online seems like a somewhat redundant statement. Next thing you we’ll have Elder Scrolls: Goodbye Daylight and Ninja Gaiden: Broken Controllers.

  2. It basically looked like a MW1/MW2 mega-mix, so a little behind the times. However it does remind me how much I enjoyed those games more than MW3. I suspect the overpowered UMP45 will cost about £12.49, at a guess.

    • MW1 best COD gameplay/maps.
MW2 best COD graphics & sound.

BOps worst modern day Cod graphics & sound.
MW3, i can only assume the talent left IW, or too many cooks/devs, or both.

Besides the last thing the U.S should be doing is programming Chinese youth with this genre lol. I reckon in the near future, China will be Americas’ worst military nightmare.

      • edit. Decencertising Chinas’ youth.
(i’m also surprised Chinas’ dictatorship, is allowing U.S. propaganda reach their shores.)

  3. Bobby Kotick: “We think China is one of the most exciting places in the world for us to make a shitload of money and to develop copy-pasted games.”

  4. Yeah I heard it was only in China, shame, but I guess if they offered a free online COD service over here nobody would spend crazy amounts on Call of Duty Elite and all the rest of it.

I’d like to see it maybe for PS Vita as I don’t tink that would hamper sales on the PS3 too much.

    • What sales on PS3? Isnt this for PC only?

  5. Tencent has a terrific track record for customer-focused innovation..
    ..like this?.. http://bit.ly/MNsya9

  6. ‘exclusively to Chinese game players.’ – so does that mean if you live in the UK and you’re Chinese, you get to play? A little racist don’t you think?

  7. Looks like all the best maps from MW and MW2, I wish I could move to China!

    • Only one game and you want to move to China already. No offence :]

    • Buy copies of MW and MW2 and save yourself a fortune in flights and chinese lessons!

  8. Seeing that container ship again brings back good memories

  9. Wow! That voice over guy is terrible!

  10. I want a COD:MP where its just one big MP game with all the maps from every COD in it, all the weapons and attachments and also, basic kill streaks. UAV, Airstrike and a Choppa. One at a time only. Gimme!

    • I’m glad someone said it before me :0)
