Microsoft has announced that there’s finally a point to massive Achievement scores, something we always thought Sony would do with their trophy system.
To get started, activate the Rewards system on your Xbox account, and then you’re good to go. If you’ve got between 3,000 and 10,000 Gamerscore you’ll get a little birthday treat (although it’s largely pointless), however, a score of between 10,000 and 25,000 gets you a 1% rebate on Live purchases. A neat idea, but a long time coming.
Even better, if you’ve got over 25,000 Gamerscore, you’ll get 2% of what you spend back each month. It’s applicable to most Marketplace purchases, including Games On Demand, Arcade games, DLC and various avatar items.
The percentages might be small, but every little counts, right?

Hmm. Better than nothing I suppose. Still think they need a service to rival Plus asap though as a sad multi console owner I can best of all worlds.

Or you could buy PS Plus and save 400%+ of what you outlay without having spent 300hrs gaming :)
It’s a nice idea by MS, but 1% and 2%? srsly?
ProjectJAY
Agreed, PS Plus is the better deal, but this is still a reward for something that a lot of people have spent many hours on and up to this point was pretty much meaningless ;)

A 5% for over 10k and a 10% over 25k would of been nicer but im not gonna grumble its better than nothing.
bunimomike
5% would’ve felt a lot better and undoubtedly create a stronger incentive for those closing in on the various thresholds. Still… a fine idea.

How do these point levels relate to the actual points that gamers have?

Apparently 1000g is what you can get for 100% completion (equiv to all bronze silver gold and platinum trophies)
So 25,000 would be 25 platinum trophies minimum.
Plenty more games not finished.
IIRC, 5g for a bronze

1% and 2% is close to nothing. Better than nothing, yes, but doesn’t real feel like a reward.
LTG Davey
2%??? Hardly worth activating the rewards system.

I bet you have to be a Gold member (snigger)?
patch
“You must have and maintain an eligible Xbox LIVE Gold membership and the applicable Gamerscore for the appropriate tier by the first of every month in order to be eligible.”
Also:
“Current phase of the Offer ends 30/06/13.”
And:
“Birthday Gift (approximate retail value (“ARV”): GBP 0.15/ $0.25 USD) from Xbox LIVE Rewards during the month of your birthday.”
Finally:
“The 1% Points refund will be calculated once at the end of each month within which the purchases were made and awarded by the 15th of the following month.”
So definitely a rebate (as stated) and not a discount as I mistakenly first thought, you still have to spend the points in the first place.

If you have a sexbox, and your GS is high, and it doesn’t cost anything to activate, and you are going to get a discount/ cash back (albeit a pittance) I fail to see what the issue is.
It’s money for nothing really.
If it was being used as a selling point, it’s a poor one though.
It’s not enough to make you buy more things, but it’s alright if you bought things already.

It might seem like nothing, (and to be fair 1 %and 2% aren’t far off nothing) but if it’s applicable across new DLC content then it certainly has merit – PS Plus may be the better deal, but you’re at the behest of what ever is available at the time.
It could be better though. And realistically 25000 GS wouldn’t be that difficult to hit, but I guess it adds a tangible reason behind achievement hunting.
