Release Of The “New PS3” Causes 138% Sale Increase

According to initial reports, sales of the PS3 jumped 138% last week after the release of the newly styled but decidely retro-looking “new” PS3.

The new PS3, with its top-loading design and deep ridges, had some speculating that Sony weren’t quite on the ball. We disagreed, and think it’s lovely.

It looks like you all agree, too, as nearly 40% of PS3 sales were the new model.

  1. I find these numbers difficult to interpret, as it could also be a lot of people thinking they’d need to get hold of one of the slim models before these will be difficult to get. And a lot of the late adopters buying a PS3 now might not really care which model it is, just buying the latest one.

Yesterday 2 weeks ago, my PS3 launch model died after running happily well since April 2007. As I don’t get around gaming as much as I used to, since then I was thinking about either replacing or repairing it. But getting hold of a heat gun and stuff at a reasonable price turned out to be difficult, at least in Switzerland. And this, multiplied by the probability I’d manage to do the repairs properly, multiplied by the probability that my machine actually has the overheating problem, multiplied by the probability that I won’t get a slim model anymore when mine breaks down again in two months time…

Ok, I’ve just decided to go and get one of the old slim models. Main reason for me is that the super slim would be dead in no time, as it seems to open up even when swiched off, and my kids are once and then playing with the inactive thing, getting virtual ice creams out etc. I just imagine that whenever I wanted to play a blue-ray or a game later in the evening, I would just find an army of smurfs and playmobile knights in there… So: no, definitely not my model the super slim, I’ll get the previous model. (But, agreed, that doesn’t explain the numbers really… ;o)

  2. Still waiting for the 12GB model, haven’t been to a store to see one in the… well, plastic :)

  3. It’s not really ugly. It just doesn’t have the money thrown at it that we’re used to. It’ll do for a cheap replacement or a new one for someone looking to slut it up with Sony for the first time.

Great news about the sales increase.

  4. Nothing beats the ‘phat’ PS3 for looks! So glad I still have mine (well, it’s been replaced about 4 times, but I still love it so I’ve kept going back to it).

  5. Impressive.
