Sources Claim PS4 Will Run At 1.84 Teraflops, 50% Faster Than Xbox 720

Backing up our post from a few days ago, another source has come forward with claims that the PS4 will have half the RAM of the next Xbox console. Apparently citing information from CES, VG247 state that the PS4 will have 4GB, with the 720 running at 8GB.

However, the report also mentions some indication of the relative power of the two machines. The report says 1.84 teraflops for Sony’s machine, and 1.23 teraflops on the Xbox. That’s a 50% boost from one to the other, something that might well offset that memory difference.

Remember that the earlier story also mentioned that the RAM on the PS4 would be much quicker.

It’s impossible to gauge the validity of all of this, of course, and ultimately it doesn’t really matter once we know what the games will be like (with most third party titles being built for the lowest common denominator, as they are now).

Analysts have pointed at a $400 price point for the still unannounced console, although it’s likely that May will be the month that we’ll first hear about it – unless, of course, Microsoft strike first.

We reckon the PlayStation 4 will have Move integrated, feature some kind of touch surface on the controller and won’t be backwards compatible. Speculation, of course, but given what we know from Sony’s past ventures, all are quite likely. We’ll know soon enough.

The VG247 report does hint at much more in the way of leaks soon from other outlets. We’ll keep a beady eye out for those, then.

  1. My humble view, for what it’s worth:

I recently re-joined this site, new account/username etc-reason i re-joined? it seemed to be a site that steered away from exactly this type of ‘slow news day’/ speculation type news reporting, yet in the last 7 day alone on here, each visit seems to bring more and more of these damn things!. they are, in all honesty, as utterly worthless as the technical spefifications both Sony+MS will be making public about the new hardware they are set to launch.

They relate to ‘on paper’ performance at best, not all game developers will be using the same game engines, devoting same resources to same specific game areas (A.I, lighting, 3D, HD textures etc), have the same no. of coders, same budgets, same time allocated per game etc.

No, those of us who are’nt interested indeed do not have to click on the story, but then that door swings both ways, you, as a site, don’t have to report every bit of speculation doing the rounds…

I’d be very happy to enter ANY debate on here on PS4/Xbox Next game code shown, even at early stages and speculate just how much better game will look or indeed how far removed it’ll be (concept footage etc), been there in past, Xbox had that 9 Min Halo 2 footage, just a demo.knocked up for E3, PS3 had that Killzone Demo, 360/Kinect saw Milo+Kate etc, but at least there you had something ‘solid’ to go on.

The more of these news stories i see on here, the less inclined i am to visit, let alone post, as the site becomes just another ‘looking for hits’ site and approaches levels i’d usually associate with Eurogamer or C+VG, it just has a whiff of lame to myself.

Sure lot of people will strongly disagree (and i’m glad, as place would be boring as hell if we all agreed like sheep on here), but i’d be fooling myself if i just said nothing.

    • I think the fact that you’ve written a well constructed and reasonable argument, and that any resulting replies won’t involve expletives or personal attacks, would be a reason to continue to visit as opposed to Eurogamer, IGN et al.

Personally I agree that a story like this is relatively meaningless in the scheme of things, but there’ll be plenty of far more meaningful ones in the same period of time one of these is posted.

    • I’m sure there used to be a “rumour” heading. Need to get it reinstated or created as this was filed as news.

  2. I’ve heard the new Xbox will run at 50 zip lobs while the PS3 will run at 150…

  3. In my eyes it is gonna be the the most multiplayer accessible one will be the best one n only the quality of games will have any say in differing that just like this generation where ps3 evidently had all the best bits and games but has only just managed to outsell the multiplayer powerhouse in the xbox 360.

  4. I like gaming rumours. Especially console based ones. Exciting times!

  5. Is all this extra power going to count for anything. The PS3 has more power yet cross platform games never look any better on the PS3, most of the time its the other way round.
