Rumour Suggests Final Fantasy Versus XIII Is Now FFXV, PS4 Exclusive, Sony Developing

Remember Shinji Hashimoto’s vague teasing at the PlayStation Meeting last month? That there’d be something to look forward to at E3 2013? Well, it turns out that it might well be Final Fantasy XV, a PS4 exclusive that Sony are assisting with development duties.

The rumours aren’t sourced elsewhere but VGLeaks seems to think that what was once Final Fantasy XIII Versus is now a brand new Final Fantasy game.

“Square-Enix announced Final Fantasy Versus XIII years ago and the game was lost in the limbo,” says the site. “Square decided to halt Versus PS3 development two years ago, but the RPG wasn’t cancelled, why? Two years ago, Square-Enix moved the game to PS4 and Sony got in the project.”

“Actually Sony is co-developing the game with Square-Enix, therefore, this game will be exclusive on PS4. Square renamed Versus to FF15 in the middle of this process. Sony’s studios are helping SE with FF15 assets among other tasks.”

Obviously take this with a pinch of salt until we hear anything (presumably at E3, as expected) but if so this is interesting news indeed. The Final Fantasy brand still holds weight, and would be a nice move for Sony to promote the upcoming PlayStation 4.

  1. If this is true, thats really good for Sony. Well done them. I’ve never played one Final Fantasy, but I see lots of people loving the series so this is good news for all.

    • Are you serious o0!?

      • yes very lol
        Its never interested me.

    • DIE!!!! *faints*

      • *uses a Phonix Down on Roy*

      • Cheap one Lone Steven. Full-life magic would be so much better :P

  2. Having a Final Fantasy as a launch itle will defiantly be a plus to the system from Europe to Japan.

  3. call it a peanut butter sandwhich, i don’t care, just finish the bloody thing. >_<

  4. I hope so much this is true. Bringing Final Fantasy franchise back to where it belongs would be for me like the “light of hope for the console world” ^^.

    • it belongs to Nintendo *rolls eyes*

      • Maybe born but not belong.
Respect for Nintendo, but FF is a PlayStation franchise ^^

      • FFIII and FFXIV have not appeared on a Sony console, kind of odd for a Playstation franchise.

      • Probably a typo on your end but XIV is coming to the PS3.

      • The only FF which did not appear on a SONY console is the III-rd part. Like KeRaSh said above: FF XIV is scheduled for PS3.

      • Also not true.
Final Fantasy III has been released with improved graphics for PSP in Japan and the great thing is it has a English text option build in.

    • Hope it sees itself at least on a console in 2014… Might be a good game but its taken ages. At least Gearbox aren’t behind it….

      • One thing that could be good about the whole delay thing is that it’s now not connected to XIII saga (Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy was it called?).
It was a good decision for FF Type-0, so this could also be a proper step to take.

  5. E3 seems so far away! I’ve been looking forward to this game for too long already. I hope the rumour is true, and that it’s out during the launch window.

  6. But I don’t get it, didn’t they show that exact Agni’s Philosophy tech demo last year? Which I thought looks gorgeous, btw. But it’s a tech demo, not necessarily a game, they said. I don’t get how that’s related to Versus/FFXV – I’m seriously asking what I’m missing here.
Also, wouldn’t a lot of people be pissed that it’s moved to PS4 now? Like Squeex cares.

    • It’s the engine they are using for future final fantasy’s I think (that might have been rumour or fact, I can’t remember).

      • I see, it’s always speculations with Square Enix, innit?

I kind of wish they would make something out of Agni’s Philosophy. I like the setting. The main character seems kind of weak but they could build a good plot on that. They should lose the dog though.

      • Yes, they are using a derivative version of the engine behind Agni for FF games (I really wish I could remember the name of the engine).
They are actually using an engine based on that one for the re-release of FFXIV.

I can imagine that the increased power of the PS4 would allow them to use the same engine (full one) in games.
(Had to look it up, Luminous Studio engine.)

  7. Well, there was an image of an internal Square Enix meeting (at least that’s the rumor) that showed a blurry projection of the title Final Fantasy XV, which started the rumors that it might be rebranded. It would make sense because now we have three FFXIII games (including Lightning Returns) that belong in a triology. People would probably get confused and wonder what Versus would have to do with the XIII series.
The jump to the PS4 isn’t that far fetched either. We were suspecting it for a while and if the game comes out close to the launch that would be a huge system seller.
How long is it until E3? :D

    • Fair point actually. If it’s a far along as we all hope the jump to PS4 is’t much of a stretch… apart from the different hardware. Depends on whether it was actually halted as a ps3 development as far back as a couple of years ago.

  8. until William Gates offers a vast sum of money and sweeps it from under Sony’s nose and flips them the middle finger…..

“right that’s that im off trolling elsewhere toodlepip!”

  9. Sony may have pulled a blinder with this. Would sell consoles to all the FF fans no matter what Microsoft have up their sleeves with their new console.

  10. Please be excited.
