What We Played #97: Plants vs Zombies, GoW: Judgment, Luigi’s Mansion 2

What We Played

Despite having completed Plants vs Zombies many times on many formats, the PlayStation Vita version helped me get through a prolonged wait of a couple of hours in Zurich airport at the end of last week. Dr Zomboss met his inevitable fate once more and Laura Shigihara’s pop-tastic credits tune rang out through my headphones.

Back in the UK last weekend, I celebrated my return home with a couple of hours of Mass Effect 3 online. Home’s just not home without it. Oh, and I wasn’t around to join in the comments for last week’s WWP but KeRaSh, the clue to where I was in Germany was in the subtitle.

[videoyoutube]Aran’s been revving up his chainsaw bayonet in Gears Of War: Judgment this week as he’s been playing through it for our review. Whatever you might think of the game’s campaign it’s the multiplayer that’s the series’ key strength and that’s where you’ll still find Aran spending plenty of time. He’s the one crouched behind the Boom Shield reloading his Gnasher.

A disappointing lack of local co-op has seen Blair and his flatmate sporadically controller-swapping as they play through Dead Space 3, a gaming pattern to be imminently repeated with God of War: Ascension.

He’s also been playing the “brilliant” Ridiculous Fishing.  It’s well worth getting “even though it’s three times the price of the standard iOS game” which, let’s face it, is still cheap.

Tuffcub sent me a very Twitter-like response this week, simply saying “Killzone 3, Captain America Super Soldier, DmC, [Need for Speed] Most Wanted on Vita” which I guess does answer the “what have you played this week” question everyone has to tolerate appearing in their inboxes.

In another alternate way of answering the same question Alex’s reply began like an introduction at a Gamers Anonymous meeting:

Hello, my name is Alex.

Hello Alex.

I like playing Luigi’s Mansion 2.

That sounds like a perfectly reasonable way of spending your free time Alex, why don’t you tell us some more about it?

It’s not because it’s the best game in the world. Not because it’s the scariest. Or the prettiest. Or the funniest.

But because it’s a really, really good game. Solid. Dependable. Reliable.

It’s not perfect, it’s not particularly deep and it’s not going to change the world.

But it’s fun. Plays well. Engages you throughout and constantly rewards.

Best thing on 3DS for ages.

That all sounds great Alex but not a reason for joining today’s Gamers Anonymous meeting, so why are you really here?

I’ve also been playing a few totally shit iPhone games.

Now that does sound like a habit worth escaping. Thank you for sharing that with us Alex. Why don’t you retake your seat and let some of the others present introduce themselves and tell us about how they’ve been sating their gaming addictions this week…

  1. As a late birthday present and because i’m fed up with fighting for control with Skyrim due to a case of crappy controller, i picked up Sleeping Dogs. Where, the problem is more annoying due to the right analog stick playing up more often. :( It’s good and feels like a TC game. True Crime, not Tuffcub before anyone of your smartarses make that joke. The combat system feels like a weaker version of Batman:Arkham City. The gunplay is okay but the main focus on melee is excellent. I do hate that it is hard to hire a taxi sometimes as i’ve accidentally stole a fair amount of them. The plot is about an undercover cop inflirating the triads or rather a part of the Triads that is known as the Red Poles.

As for Skyrim, well, i completed Sheogorath’s quest and recieved Wabbajack. Wabbajack is my new favorite staff as it is unpredictable. It also helped me to kill Vokun, a Dragon Priest. I did make the foolish mistake of taking him on, at level 7, on a pure mage build and died 3 times before i could kill him. I’ve joined the COW. Won’t be playing Skyrim untill i have a DualShock 3.

In Film watch, i’ve seen Salt, the Anglina Jolie film, tis excellent. It’s about a CIA agent being identified as a russian sleeper agent and is forced to go on the run. It makes you wonder if she is actually a sleeper agent or if she is not due to what she does during the film. Won’t say more as it will spoil it. Saw Sunshine and what the hell did i watch? It’s about restarting the sun by dropping a bomb the size of manhattan on it but there are some parts where i truely didn’t have a clue what was going on. Twas enjoyable.

I watched Top Gear last night, the Cruise and Diaz episode as i was led to believe it was the motorhome challenge one. Am a bit disappointed by that but it gave me an excuse to watch Top Gear. Watched In The Flesh. It has potential and is good. It’s set after a zombie outbreak and zombies have been cured. Okay, they are still zombies but they are just undead humans instead of undead humans that will eat you. They face predjuice from the humans. I’m not really doing it justice but it is worth checking out.

I saw the Transporter 2 last week. Twas good but not as good as the first one. Transporter 3 reuses the plot from Transporter 2 and just changes a few things around. I watched a few Lee Evans DVDs during the past fortnight. He is a very funny monkey boy. I’m trying to get Roadrunner from my local shops but it seems that Dover and Folkestone have ran out of copies. :O I can’t order it online as Lloyds don’t offer a bloody protection program or if they did, i’m unable to access it. >:(

I found out that DS3’s are a bit expensive and the cheapest one i could get is £32-5. :O

I may have got a bit carried away this week and i suspect Hazlam will try to sue me for unauthorised use of her patented wallotext tech. :O

    • I noticed Asda are selling a Dual Shock & 3 months of PS+ bundle for £40 at the moment. Might be worth the extra few quid? If not (and you don’t mind the design) GAME are doing an official camo one for 30quid

      • My local one is shite so i wouldn’t be able to get it. I suspect the one in Folkestone doesn’t stock it. :( The 3 months of PS+ is useless to me as i can’t connect to PSN. Due to broadband being best suited for general browsing.

  2. Mainly Tomb Raider for me this week. We’ve had some great games on the TSA meets organised by Mr R1MJAW.
Also been trying to get to grips with the Vita controls for MGS HD collection – nearly there.

  3. Mainly Tomb Raider multiplayer. I’ve been switching between grinding xp solo and trying to get the ranked mode wins … so far I’ve only managed a win on rescue … although I should have probably had a team death match win but was hit with a very odd loading screen in the middle of the second round that I couldn’t get out of, and I’ve come close to winning about 5 or 6 free for all matches but always get pipped to the post right at the end.

If I can get those done I should hopefully have my TR platinum later today.

I also finished off all the single player stuff in WRC Powerslide, just 45 minutes of online racing required to get 100%.

    • So R1M, did the Shopaholic glitch work?

      • Not quite there yet, but I’m close, probably another 2 hours. I’ll msg you on PSN when I’ve tried it.

      • Ok matey, thanks! Good luck!

      • it would be handy to know also as im gonna try it.

      • Witnessed it myself last night (my mate has been playing that game religiously, lol).
Works a treat, just make sure you move across to the General, switch faction, go to purchase Lara (or indeed anyone else you haven’t purchased on that team) and press X and Triangle at the same time. You will know if you’ve done it right as it will jump over to the General and ask if you want to unlock him. If not, just back out and try again.
Great little glitch that will save a lot of time, assuming CD don’t make him free in the long run :-)

    • Update on Tomb Raider … platinum achieved thanks to the shopaholic glitch.

  4. Platinum God of war:A, came here to claim the fastest only to see wolf of chaos claimed it already dam you!!!

Been playing tomb raider, this game is boring AF, maybe it will pick up but so far, all that praise for is it is just overrated noise

  5. 3 words since it arrived Wednesday. Project Diva F.

    OMG! Its amazing!

  6. The Saboteur. An oldie I never gave much time to, but very much enjoyed playing this week. Completed the story and was working through the other bits towards a ninth platinum, but ended up spending the night at the hospital as my beautiful baby boy was born!
