Confirming earlier rumours, David Hayter is no longer the voice of Kojima’s Snake, with Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland taking up the role.
The news comes via Konami’s pre-E3 conference, streaming now but inexplicably also available in its entirety on YouTube, above.
“Look, I tried to warn you,” said Hayter on Twitter.

His gruff voice will suit the part and he’s done plenty of voice work before too (in the film world).

I was fond of Hayter’s voice as one of the endearing quirks of the MGS series, but he always sounded like a regular guy doing a Clint Eastwood impression. I wouldn’t be too surprised if there was a little friction during MGS4 recordings, where Hayter had to record the absurdly strained “Old Snake” voice for hours on end. If Konami’s smart, they’ll find a way to work him into another role, in this or a future MGS title.

I think it will be alright. I guess Surgerland might be a better actor, and that shows in such detailed motion capture.

Well, if its not gonna be Hayter or Doyle the Sutherland’s a cracking choice. I’m sat watching 24 right now, he’s got the right gritty grumble for the job.
The only thing I’m confused about now is why the hell does the guy in bandages sound like Kiefer too?

The top theory is that the guy in the bandages isn’t real, he’s part of Snake’s damaged mind.

I love MGS. They are my favourite games ever. Hayter rules and will always own the MGS legacy as Solid Snake. I’m still mega excited about the new game though :-))

+ Snakes face looks rubbish really :-/ Some other bits of MGS5 looked amazing tho :-P
I guess at least it didn’t say ‘ONLY FOR XBOX ONE’ at the end of the MGS5 video, but we still got next week to go LoL:D

i can’t help but feel a little disappointed that Hayter’s not voicing snake any more.
but if that’s the direction they’re going, it’s up to them.
Kiefer Sutherland is a great actor though so i have no doubt he’ll put in a great performance.
it’s just, Hayter has been the voice of Snake for something like 15 years now.
anyway, hopefully they’ll actually show some of his work soon so we can get some idea what Kiefer Sutherland as snake is like.
also, i like what they’re doing with the Castlevania game.
the open world and the modern day setting, could be interesting, the modern day setting was one of the things i liked about Darksiders.
and hey, unless i’m very much mistaken, that’s Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Zobek, he automatically makes something better just by being in it.

I think that either they will both end up in the game, or Kiefer is just going along with it and helping Kojima troll us.
Either way, as much as David being as part of of the game as the character itself, I can live with Kiefer. Also, 24 will be back for one more season! WHERE ARE THE DRUGS GODAMMIT! :D
