PlayStation 4 Is Region Free, HDD Upgradeable

Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios and man who probably has grin wider than the Moon at this very moment, has delivered yet more good news:

“Yes, PS4’s HDD is upgradable like PS3,” he tweeted, as well as, “And yes, PS4 is region free :D”.

Presumably he means that just the games will be region free, rather than both games and blu-ray movies.

He also answered a few more questions via Twitter, and there is some bad news… brace yourselves people. PlayStation Home is not confirmed for PS4. The horror!

He summed it all up with “It was a great day today, an understatement”.

Meanwhile, on Wikipedia…

  1. Very funny on wiki.
Sony have really gone for MS on this Ps4 and I’m glad. I’ve never been a fan of MS since being quite young but I’m not fanboy-ish with hatred. No region lock is great.

  2. I think a 2tb HDD would be a good starting point given the amount of stuff were likely to be downloading from Gaikai next year.

  3. Nice to see that the PS4 is going to be region free, and of course staying with the upgradeable hdd.
However this don’t mean that every game won’t have any region restrictions it just means it will be up to the developers/publishers to decide what they want to do, but these two are nonetheless another two great blows towards X1.

  4. Love the difference in approaches
Sony – Want to borrow a game from a buddy in the US? Just get him to send it over
MS – Want to borrow a game from a buddy next door? Sorry, computer says no

  5. I laughed so hard at the wikipedia entry!

  6. Region locking is the one of the most annoying things in consoles, especially for those of us paying twice as much due to currencies, good to see Sony made yet another good decision with PS4.

  7. That wikipedia entry is hilarious!

  8. it’s good that you can still upgrade the hard drive, but it should be a while before you need to as you don’t have to install every game on the hard drive, like certain other machines.

and with the ability to play games you’re downloading while they’re still downloading, it should make it easier to manage the space when you know you can delete a game and when when you want to play it again you don’t have to wait till the entire thing downloads, and you don’t need twice the space like you do with the current download and install process.

of course, they’re going to have to speed up their network some.

  9. haha that wikipedia pic is just awesome!!

am i the only that feels like Sony has already “won” the next gen?
