Haven’t Got Internet? Microsoft’s Don Mattrick Says Get An Xbox 360

Don Mattrick has given an interview to GameTrailers talking about the Xbox One and the reception it has got. Obviously he isn’t going to come out and say that reaction has been negative but there are some instances in the interview that make you raise your eyebrows. One of those points is that Don Mattrick advises that if you don’t have internet access then you can get an Xbox 360.

The exact segment about the Xbox 360 starts around the 1:40 mark. Even Geoff Keighley seems a little taken back by replying with. “So stick with 360. That’s your message?”

You can kind of see Don panic a bit afterwards once that question is asked. There are other moments during the interview where Don does really try to push the angle that this is good for gamers. He says the Xbox One is a console “for gamers by gamers,” and that people will come to appreciate the online connectivity.

I kind of feel sorry for Don because he didn’t have much wiggle room. He couldn’t exactly promote the PS4 and he has to get as much positive PR for the One as possible but his job has been made difficult by having the authentication feature while Sony came out and said they wouldn’t have it. Where Microsoft goes from here, and how the company responds to the negative reception, is anybody’s guess.

  1. Is this really happening… :P

  2. was he the one who if you need more storage you should buy a second hard drive for the 360 because the 20 gig it came with early on was too small?

and what an insightful and probing interview by Keighley there.
the richard and judy of gaming.

you know, i’d almost feel sorry for mattrick, having to spout that crap when he knows the majority of people hate the machine, well, not the machine itself, just the policies ms have for it.
i did say almost, if he wasn’t so bloody smarmy it might actually be possible to empathise with him.

  3. What a douche. Kinda reminds me of Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky. After the car crash.

  4. Holy shieeeetttt. It’s not even like Microsoft is trying to kill themselves, they are literally aiming an RPG towards their own face and shooting it. Jesus.

  5. Well, at least on the 360 you don’t have to ask MS for permission every day to play the game you bought, and they can’t decide that your whole games collection is null and void at some point by switching their servers off. I’d say even if you have internet, it’s the better choice ;)

Don claims “…we did a lot of consumer research…” in the interview, but it seems they then decided to ignore the results and go with #DealWithIt instead.

    • “a lot of consumer research”

      around the ms offices.

      worded like this.
      “which do you value most?”
      “A: offline operability.”
      “B: your job”

      ^_^

  6. Why do they have such contempt for their consumers?

I really can’t see how any of them are not able to see the absolute PR nightmare they have created for themselves. Friends of mine that at the announcement of the Xbox One were frothing and saying how they loved it and would mostly likely upgrade their 360 for a One when it was launched have now said that they will go for the PS4. Although that seems to be mostly down the cost not much opinion has been expressed about the whole online requirement and the constant extra person in the room that the new Kinect seems to be

Which is actually quite good for me as I might have people to play online games with now!

  7. He can’t actually think that Xbox gamers are gonna flock to the nextbox after the shit that Microsoft are forcing on their customers for next gen. Surely he must know that their policies for the nextbox are going down like a lead balloon, and as such, are practically handing the next gen title to Sony. I dunno exactly how many times I’ve said this in the last couple of days, but I’ll say it again…..Game, Set and Match to Sony.

  8. It’s the only thing he can say though, isn’t it? He can’t publically admit MS have **** up, and he can’t say buy a PS4 then. The 360 is the only alternative MS can offer to those without constant internet.

  9. Sad to see Microsoft losing its mind.

    • But good to see Sony doing so well after the last few years.

  10. To coin popular comedy culture, “This sh*t just writes itself”
