Leak Suggests Arkane Austin Are Developing Prey 2

Prey 2 has been a title in a strange alien limbo for quite a while, but a string of leaking emails seem to have scuppered any plans for Bethesda to keep a revitalised development plan under wraps.

Kotaku let rip with the rumour back in May, that Arkane Austin – responsible for the lastest Dishonored DLC, and not the Lyon-based Arkane parent studio – were working on a fresh take of Prey 2, and this is now seemingly confirmed by a pair of emails which they have obtained. No doubt there were dead drops and clandestine briefcase exchanges near park benches, but either way it’s clear that Arkane have a mole in their midsts.

Both emails came from back on May 27th, with Raphael Colantonio’s first taking a congratulatory tone:

For the ones who were not at last week’s company meeting:

Austin has officially been green lit for its own project! This is super exciting of course.

Doing a new IP was not a possibility because it’s adding risk to the challenge of growth, so after going back and forth with Todd, Harvey, Ricardo we decided that Prey 2 presented an interesting opportunity if we could reboot it. Zenimax accepted our pitch which was “the spiritual successor to System Shock [2]”.

So there you go.

There we go, indeed. Of course, once Kotaku broke the news that this was happening, they were bombarded with requests for comment, leading to the following, equally internal-and-not-for-public-consumption-but-leaked-anyway email:

Now that the news is out, we’ll be contacted left and right by press sneak ***** who will want to know more.

Please don’t answer to any of their requests.

Charmed, I’m sure.

Bethesda replied to Kotaku’s latest request for information, stating, “We aren’t talking about what Arkane is working on and we have no new information to share on Prey 2.”

Still, for those who enjoyed the original Prey, there’s a fresh hope that we’ll see a sequel. It doesn’t sound like the work done by human Head is going to be used, and this will effectively have a whole new development cycle as a consequence. So, don’t expect to see any real footage or official news for a while yet, and don’t expect it to look anything like the header image, either!

  1. I want to know more. ;)

    • Then you should have been at the meeting!

  2. I’m happy that it’s still in development but if it ends up being completely different to the original concept that we were shown I’ll be quite disappointed. C’mon, a bounty hunter on an alien world…how awesome is that!?

  3. I hope it doesn’t change to dramatically as Human Head’s approach to Prey 2 was brilliant looking.
