After years of troubled development it has been confirmed that Prey 2 has been cancelled. The confirmation comes from Bethesda’s Vice President, Peter Hines, who told CNET at PAX Australia that the publisher had ceased production. This follows years of rumours and speculation about the game, including a cancellation rumour from a few years back. Originally Human Head Studios were tasked to creating a sequel to the the 2006 Prey, but after some contract issues it was reported the studio had stopped working on Prey 2.
“It was game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be – we never saw a path to success if we finished it. It wasn’t up to our quality standard and we decided to cancel it. It’s no longer in development. That wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s one that won’t surprise many folks given that we hadn’t been talking about it.”
Bethesda had stated the game hadn’t been delayed but did not meet the standards of the company, and that’s why news was thin on the ground. Everything went quiet for a long while during that whole period. Then last year fresh rumours arose that Bethesda had passed the project to Dishonored DLC devs, Arkane Austin to finish the job. Nothing was ever truly confirmed, but it that was true it looks like Bethesda wasn’t happy with what was being made.
