Sony’s Latest Head-Mounted Display Revealed – Works With PlayStation

Over in Berlin, at the IFA consumer electronics show, Sony have announced their newest head-mounted display, the HMZ-T3W. This wireless 3D-ready personal viewer includes 7.1 virtual surround sound and two tiny OLED displays – giving the user the viewing equivalent of a 750″ display from 20 meters. Wowza!

Due this side of Christmas, the wireless headset will connect to PCs, mobiles and games consoles, say Sony.

This all comes just days after reports that Sony are looking at releasing their own VR headset for the PlayStation4.

Details on that model in particular are thin on the ground, but all whispers certainly point to it existing, and with Sony continuing to push wearable tech, it can be only a matter of time before we’re all looking like Daft Punk.

  1. Doesn’t seem like it might be a direct rival to Occulus Rift after all.. unless they’ve left out some details..

    • The HMZ-T3 is a personal viewer which will work on your PS4, due this November. Sony’s VR headset is another product altogether, and is (rumoured to be) in development, for release about a year from now.

Hope that clears things up. :)

      • Ah my bad, thought this was the new one. Cheers! :)

    • It sure is pricey!

  2. £1,299.00

    Dear lord …

  3. I was about to say I’m getting this until I saw the cost of it. Sheesh. Looks absolutely amazing though to be honest.

  4. Looks like this is the new gimmick technology that we’ll be told is essential until they realise there’s little interest and it gets ditched.

    • It might be a gimmick, but It’s certainly nothing new. Nintendo made the virtual boy in 1995.

I just can’t see the appeal, sure, it’s like a huge tv, but compared to the oculus rift it sounds dull. I’m much more interested in the rumoured one… I just hope It’s cheaper.

      • Don’t Forget Atari got there before Nintendo with their VR headset! Was very heavy to wear, but great tech for the time! Shame it never got passed the prototype stage, but was always a crowd puller at retro events!

  5. The HMZ-T3W is nearly three times the price of the previous version (HMZ-T2), is it three times better?

  6. Bit expensive!

  7. 750″ at 20m = 75″ at 2m = 7.5″ at 20cm… so, normal tablet use? :P

I hate the comparison they always use for these kind of things.

  8. Had an eye on these devices since the T1 launched.
If they build in the gyroscopic controls (or however they’ve managed it) then I’m gonna bite.
Seemed obvious that this tech and the PlayStation would link up at some point. Got a feeling it’ll be only first party titles supporting it.

  9. Oculus Rift will probably cheaper!
