Grand Theft Auto V has become the fastest selling videogame in UK history, it has been revealed.
Chart Track data shows GTA V sold a staggering 1.57m units during its first day on sale, breaking the previous record set by Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, which managed a mere 1.41m when it launched in November 2010.
These sales figures mean Rockstar have generated upwards of £65m in revenue on the £170m game so far. The numbers also mean that in its opening 24 hours, GTA V made more money than the entirety of the boxed retail games market for the previous two months.
You can read our review of the game here.
Thanks, MCV.

Not surprised. Thoroughly deserves it.

Numbers are number and they don’t blow you away, but this statement:
‘…GTA V made more money than the entirety of the boxed retail games market for the previous two month.’

This is both astounding and worrying at the same time… & that’s before you think of all the murders and such that’ll happen thanks to this game warping peoples minds!
ron_mcphatty
I’d agree with the Daily Mail ‘GTA turned me into a murderer’ line if Scientology membership went up this quarter too.

I’d rather believe that children should not be let to play this game before an appropiate age. I played GTA before 18 so did my sister, but so far we did not turn out to be murderers.
I believe it differs on the parenting type. Same goes with alchohol, my parents have a ton of alchohol and they always said if I want some, I can have whatever (gin, wine, beer). And I tried them at home, in a controlled environement. So for me, all that: ‘I will go out Saturday night and drink till I drop because my parents cannot see me’- was useless.

Judging by the queue, 95% of that came from Paisley.
SilverCider
No, pretty sure it came from Game in Sheffield town centre. Apparently queues were comparable to gigs for midnight release!

Did anyone chuck Fairy Liquid in the fountain? Bloody students… :)
The sales stats are hugely impressive so far, when the game inevitably makes it to next gen and PC I can’t imagine there will be many records left standing.
SilverCider
Haha, not this time. I am personally holding out for the PC version so I’m trying to stay clear of the spoilers and whatnot. I had IV for PS3 but didn’t end up finishing it as it performed rather poorly, ended grabbing the entire GTA collection in a steam sale for a fiver and it was far better; still playing it on the odd occasion.
It is very tempting though especially since the PS3 version has much better performance than IV did (fixed in one of the DLCs apparently!)
PARKER94!
expectable, first midnight launch i attended, they was queing from the till, inside the shopping center, out the door, then out the door of the shopping centre, all the way to the edge of town. Where was I? Back of the que, almost 2 hours I waited!

I just waited for the postie to deliver it. Didn’t fancy the 60 odd mile round trip to nearest store.

Not surprised it sold so many, wonder what the split was between the two consoles?

Take Two say $800 million (£496,555,200) in launch-day sales.
Still to launch in Japan and Brazil.
Reports reckon it could be first game to take $1 billion in first month.
Adam Garrett
$800 million on launch day makes it the biggest entertainment launch ever, blowing away the previous number 1.
Germanos
Same thing in Poland. Fastest selling video game in Poland history.

Amazing stuff. I’m enjoying it so much more than I did IV. I loved the lost and the damned reference.
bigchrissyc
Does that figure include pre-orders that were dispatched early and thus paid for earlier than the actual launch day? Or is that just hard copies purchased on the day?
