First Image Of The Steam Machine Prototype Released

Valve has lifted the lid on what the Steambox, the company’s attempt at bringing PC standard gaming to the living room, could look like with an image of the current prototype having been released via a hands on by The Verge.

According to the hands on the current prototype is 12 inches long and 2.9 inches wide, with the large size of the case allowing the components to sit comfortably, and to create a more efficient cooling system. Apparently each component’s airflow exits the machine from a different area.

Other news is that release and price information is expected in January, as well as the games that will be available. Also the Steam Machines are not going to have exclusive Valve titles, so you’ll be able to enjoy Half Life 3 on any PC, if it gets announced at any point in time.

Of course this prototype is just one model, and other types of the Steam Machine will be available from midway next year, so it’ll be interesting to see how designs change based on the types of specs the machines will be running.

What do you think of the current prototype?

  1. Looks a bit like the X1, not the best design but I suppose it’s a prototype so could change.

  2. No idea of material finish so very hard to assess. The design is okay although I think it looks a little dated (Apple circa 2005) but there we go.

  3. Looks like my VHS from 20 years ago lol

  4. I expect to be able to make a cup of coffee with anything called a “steam machine”.

That being said. I have a gaming quality PC that already connects to my TV, so I doubt I’ll ever see a reason to buy one of these. Guess I’m just not the target market. But it does look nice, to be fair.

  5. Very generic looking

  6. OMG ITS A BLACK BOX!! TEH ORIGINALITY! IT BURNS!!!!

  7. Looks like an unfinished Xbox design. I’d r

    • … I’d rather build my own computer really, but if the price is right and it’s easily upgradable
      I could perhaps be swayed.

  8. 12 inches long? That makes me feel uncomfortable.

  9. Looks nice, although I think it would be better without so many 90* angles. Pricing will be key to see if this has any impact on the console market though.

  10. I just read the Verge article, it’s really interesting and covers a lot more than just the look of the box. It still seems like Valve are investing a lot in a project that’s more fascinating than exciting, I dont know if I’d ever buy a Steam Box but I’m hooked by the originality of it.
