Sony’s Jim Ryan has appeared on BBC breakfast discussing the PlayStation 4 launch.
He was first asked about the PlayStation 3 launch, “We were late, we were expensive, we were confused,” said Jim before explaining that for the PlayStation 4, “Every decision was taken with the gamer in mind.”
The interviewer then discussed the price on the console and the games. “These games take many years to develop, take teams that number in hundreds with budgets bigger than Hollywood blockbusters,” said Jim. “It’s not like you play it for five hours, people spend ten, fifteen, hundreds of hours playing a single game so they represent value for money.”
The interviewer then explained his children spent many, many hours sat in front of a console and asked Jim how “How long do you advise kids to play these games? Parents are frustrated at the amount of time they spend in front of the TV.”
Jim then gave the answer which would have all of us punching the air, “You need to look after your kids a bit better! We feel that parental responsibility is of the utmost importance.”
Note: I was transcribing the interview as it went out live on air and is currently not available on BBC iPlayer for me to check my notes are correct. However Jim did most certainly say “You need to look after your kids better” – go Jim!

Wow, finally someone gives the correct answer to that question!
Thanks for reporting this by the way. I saw them anounce they were getting an interview when I left for work just after 7 this morning. Was a little annoyed that I’d miss it. Been keeping an eye on the web site…

Finally! I wonder what the response of the interviewer was. I think I will check it out on iPlayer once it’s available.

There was a little embarrassed/awkward laughter. It was quite an interestingly honest answer to the lazy buck-shifting parental question.

haha nice, very nice.
Its weird I usually pick up on advertising campaigns and marketing, and see the loop holes. But it seems Sony are just being honest? I trust them some how? Since February I’ve just trusted them and they’ve now delivered the console they said they would.

This is the perfect response! Over in Ireland here some primary schools had letters sent home to the parents urging them not to pick up GTA 5 for their kids this year-even the fact a letter stating this had to be sent just shows the general level of parent ignorance if they buy something with an 18 slapped across it – if you don’t want your children pretending to shoot hookers then don’t buy them content that is age inappropriate?!

We need this as a gif, for posterity.

As a parent of 3 I couldn’t agree more! Playstation for my kids is seen as a reward and we actively get involved with what they play…by this I mean I get my ass kicked by my 9 year old on most games :(

Well said!
