Currently, the only way to listen to music in the background on PS4 while playing games is by subscribing to Sony’s Music Unlimited service, which costs £9.99 per month. It’s a good service, with a lot of variety, but Sony are now offering a superb deal which should only cost you about a tenth of the amount of three months of subscribing.
Simply head over to this link, and if you’re in a European PSN region then you should be eligible for the deal, which will net you a 90-day subscription for just £3.
You have until the 26th of January to sign up for the offer, so if you’re not quite ready right now then that’s still almost two weeks. Just remember to cancel the subscription before the 90 days are up, or else you’ll have to pay the flat 30-day subscription fee for subsequent months.
It’s a good deal, and worth trying out if you want to listen to music while shooting people, driving your car or doing whatever it is that Knack does.

Cashing in before its patched so we can play our own music? Or am I being cynical? ;)
Starman
Still £3 more than it should be to listen to music in-game.

Agreed. Interestingly, I was having a game on the PS3 (GTA V with a friend) and he said “does the PS4 do {this, this and this}?” to which I had to answer “yes, no and no”. Basically I had to point out that his PS3 being used as a multimedia device for the family is best to keep like that until the PS4 is addressed. I know we all use our hardware differently but the basics STILL need to be sorted out.

I think you’re right to call them basics. Anti-piracy aside, the only reasons to prohibit video and audio storage and playback are due to business tie-ins and Sony are old enough, honorable enough and established enough as a company to be above such money grabbing. Or at least, they should be.
I believe in them though and still I think they’re mainly holding off on dishing out our free 3D, Divx and MP3 licenses until the new financial year, so the inevitable launch losses look smaller to the shareholders than last generation. I’m more than happy to forgive them for a bit of budget massaging, in the mean time though I won’t upgrade, the PS4 doesn’t yet fully replace the PS3 and thats not good enough for me.

Yeah, I just don’t see how a companies next console can be seen as a successor when it removes basic features. Same with the xbox.

Exactly. Imagine if I wasn’t taller or stronger than my older brothers. My folks would’ve been devastated. I’ve always seen them as a “practice run” to the definitive article that stands before you here. :-P

Mike… You suit more gravatar more and more everyday. :)
bunimomike
One might say I gravatarted to it subconsciously when I chose it.
Ahem.

It’s only for new subscribers. Was looking forward to getting another 3 months for £3. Sad times.
So far by riding the deals I’ve managed to get 15 months of the service for £15.

I haven’t even bothered with the free trial, still using my PS3 for media until the PS4 is patched for mp3/cd/dlna.
Bilbo_bobbins
Pay to listen to music while I game? Fuck off Sony, patch it so we can listen to our own.
ArrebatoTarugo
PS4 needs an firmware update. I am using my PS3 far too much these days…

Just out of interest, does anyone listen to background music when playing things like BF4 online? I’ve never tried it & can’t imagine it doing me any favours whilst I’m running around trying to avoid gun fire etc.
On the other hand I’d like the option to be available in DriveClub and I’m not gonna sign up for Unlimited when I’ve already got 1000s of my own tracks. Bring on the patch!

On the other hand, £3 a month is cheap but my music collection hasn’t changed for about the last 15 years apart from the odd track or two. The chance to listen to most modern music whenever, wherever is good but unfortunately doesn’t appeal to me. I couldn’t name more than 2 songs what are currently in the charts.
