Dead Rising 3 Has A 13GB Update, Puts Zombie Killing On Hold

Patches are par for the course in modern day gaming, from fixing bugs to added new content. Most times you can’t play a game until you download a patch, unless your console is disconnected from the internet, but most aren’t that big.

However it looks like Capcom may have broken some kind of record (and people’s bandwidth caps) after it came to light that Dead Rising 3 has a mandatory 13GB update. As of time of writing I’ve been unable to find an official confirmation as to  what exactly this patch is for. However the most prevailing theory is that this is for the game’s DLC, with some saying the DLC is downloaded now, then unlocked later.

If that’s the case seems a bit wrong to force people to download content they may not want, especially one that as big as 13GB. Even if that isn’t the case and this is bug fixes then it still appears a bit much. Or it could be a mix of fixes and DLC.

You can avoid the update by staying offline, but if you want to be online while playing Dead Rising 3 then you need to download the patch. Let’s just hope such patch sizes don’t become the norm, as that standard 500GB drive in the new gen consoles won’t last very long.

  1. I do dislike these mandatory updates that are obviously dlc packs. Its nothing new though, I remember Pain on PS3 having regular updates which were just dlc packs.

I guess the logic is you’re more likely to impulse buy dlc if you’ve already got it downloaded.

  2. Mandatory? That’s pretty unacceptable, what the hell were they thinking?

    • Agreed 100%. This cannot become acceptable. :-\

  3. Apparently it overwrites a lot of the pre-installed data so in the end it only holds up a gig or so more. But I have no sound confirmation on this, just the word of a random internet person.

Still a hell of a download, Capcom needs to bring out an explanation.

  4. 13GB! Unless you bought the game with the possibility of thinking you may sell it as used once you’ve played it, it makes buying a physical disc version pretty pointless. If I was in that situation I think I’d rather have a refund and purchase the digital version.

  5. That’s pretty appalling really, unless it’s a rewrite of the original code but with most American’s on a capped broadband service, I wonder how many will just trade the game in?

  6. These patches are getting ridiculous, though the worst so far has to be Killer Instinct’s. While nowhere near this 13GB, the update was the same size as the full game (4GB download, 4GB update)!
My connection (on a good day with the wind blowing in the right direction) is roughly 2.5MB so these file sizes are becoming a real hassle.
At this rate I’m tempted to buy just a small handful of games and play those. If not, I fear I will be spending most of my gaming time waiting for updates to finish.

  7. Tbh, a 13gb update is just taking the piss. Most people’s broadband will be straining at the seams trying to download this file.

  8. 13Gb is not a patch, its a major re-write.
