UK Charts 17/03/14: Titanfalls Into First Place, Increases Xbox One Sales By 96%

Xbox One exclusive Titanfall has unsurprisingly landed the top spot this week and has more than doubled the sales of the previous 2014 leader, FIFA 14.

The sales take in to account the digital download version of the game included in the special Titanfall Xbox One pack. The title has helped increase sales of the console by 96% compared to the previous week, but as we don’t know what the hardware sales for Xbox One were last week a percentage increase is of little meaning. Let’s just assume it was “lots”.

New entry Dark Souls II has performed better than its predecessor with a 20% increase in week 1 sales whilst Nintendo miss out on the top ten with Yoshi’s New Island bouncing in to number 12.

Further down the chart Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Killzone Shadow Fall and Forza 5 have all been outsold by Aliens: Colonial Marines. When will this madness end?!?

UPDATE: This cunningly proves my point that percentage increases of sales are a bit useless.

  1. Interested to see inFamous/Titanfall showdown next week. Of course, Titanfall will be back on top the week after with the 360 version.

    • Can’t see Infamous offering much of a fight in all honesty. I myself can’t wait, I loved the other games. Sad fact is though FPS titles just sell like hot cakes. Easy to pick up and play and great for gaming with friends.

Infamous will sell well enough, but it won’t sell half as many systems as Titanfall. Microsoft + EA = major marketing. They’ve spent god knows how many millions.

      • But where? Cos I aint seen a single add on a bus, or a poster, or anything. And I’m in central London where that kind of thing usually happens.

      • The Champions league is on the tellybox tomorrow – I bet there’ll be an ad or two during that.

  2. Xbone sale must be bad when percentages are quoted, not real numbers. Only a total Numbskull would fall for marketing spin that talks about percentage increases with any real numbers for context.

Infact anyone using them in headlines needs a reality check too, sad to say,

    • Not at all. We actually know that the XBOne has been hot on the heels of the PS4 recently so an increase of 96% is likely to mean a massive jump in sales, probably ahead of the PS4.

Although yes, sometimes a percentage sounds more impressive than a number. An increase of 1 to 2 sounds rubbish. An increase of 100% sounds much better. But we know they’re selling XBOnes by the handful.

      • when your system goes out of stock as quick as PS4 the XB1 catching up is a bit skewed.

    • Hi,

Here at TSA we don’t really tolerate fanboyism. Also if ps4 is outselling x1 at about 3:2 then this would mean that x1 has done well this week with it almost doubling it’s numbers.

      Thanks

      AIR

      • I think on a PlayStation oriented site such as this you have to expect a certain level of fanboy-ism going on, that’s why most of us landed here in the first place :-), as long as it doesn’t become abusive\petty or isn’t seen to be baiting arguments. Although, to be fair, I wouldn’t say this comment falls into that category…

However, slagging off the writer for reporting on the story how it’s given to them… That IS a bit off. Had he ignored the percentage quoted people would see it as selective, biased reporting…

      • Yeah shut up Ted. :P

    • he has a point imo 96% of what?

  3. As you said, a percentage means nothing unless you know the number it is referring to. Still, an increase is never a bad thing.

What is more surprising is that Microsoft haven’t come out and said we have sold x amount of this game. Maybe it’s slightly too early but if the sales numbers were as high as they hoped, they would be most definitely shouting about it from the rooftops. Think that doesn’t bode too well.

  4. I’d be very interested to see the proportion of PC Titanfall sales to XOne sales.

We’d need worldwide figures for that though considering how many people bought it from Mexican Origin.

    • Your wish is my command.. splitting the chart in to individual formats, Titanfall X1 is first, Titanfall PC is 8th, beaten by South Park, Dark Souls, Minecraft and PvZ on 360 and PS3 where applicable.

  5. To be fair to Microsoft, they have done a brilliant job of making it look like an Xbox One exclusive.

I wonder how many kids out there will hear the hype and see the adverts not realising it’s coming to the 360? It’ll be interesting to see how the sales of Xbox One copies are affected when the 360 version is released.. I expect them to drop pretty sharpish.

On a completely separate note – it’s GDC week! Wahoo!

  6. Looks like the exclusivity deal has paid off for MS.

    • I wonder if it paid off for the EA though. Impossible to know but always wonder if the amount paid my MS offsets the loss of potential sales from PS4 – PS3.

Guess we will never really know.

      • I’m sure they recently said it didn’t. Or someone claimed as much, even if EA didn’t actually say it. The money MS gave them nowhere near covers what they’d get from PS4 and PS3 sales.

They’ll make up for it when they suddenly decide it can run just fine on the PS4. At one point, weren’t they claiming it couldn’t due to the Magical Power of the Clouds? It won’t be coming any time soon, but it’ll happen eventually.

      • Going by the majority of comments on here most wouldn’t have got it anyway. Not enough players/graphics/modes/innovation (delete as applicable)

And Killzone to compete with as well.

  7. Whose busying all these copies of Aliens?? There’s a warehouse somewhere full of em, got to be. Impressive boost for the X1, Sainsburies have got them lined up with Titanfall included at three shops I’ve seen in the last couple of days, v good visibility.

  8. Now that hardware is back in stock, it’s about time the PS4 gets a system seller too. (Just hope this comment is not seen as fanboyism… ;o)
