Guerilla Games’ GDC Talk Highlights The Tech Of Killzone Shadow Fall

Killzone Shadow Fall is an outstanding looking game in my opinion. From those moments floating in space to the gun battles in the city, it really showed that the new generation was here in a big way. Now Guerrila Games has lifted the lid on some of the more technical aspects of the flagship shooter of the PS4, with the polygons of characters and the length of a map discussed.

  • Characters made up of 40,000 polygons, with textures up to four times that of Killzone 3.
  • 200 different static lights per level, with the same number of light maps too.
  • The maps of Shadow Fall were between 10 and 100 times bigger than Killzone 3, with one stage being five miles long.
  • Image Based Lighting used to simulate lighting rather than rendering in other ways.
  • A total of 683,334 building blocks present in the game, with 10,000 to 25,000 used per level. Twice as high as Killzone 3.

Those were the main points raised in the talk and what jumps out at me is the length of one of the levels. I’m trying to wrack my brain to work out which level is that long, and I want to say either the space based mission where you float between areas, or when traversing the ruins of Helghan. Either way some big numbers in that breakdown.

  1. Lovely stuff. Also, bodes well for games like 1886 as the lead character has 100,000 polygons making up his moustachioed form. Saying that, 1886 is a far more tightly controlled game so there’s more opportunity to be lavish with the objects, characters, etc.

    • I thought you said 100,000 just for his moustache for a second then. My brain nearly caught fire with all the glorious images of such a finely done moustache gracing the game.

Is it weird that I want that now?

      • Actually, what’s amazing is that 15,000 polygons were used for the main characters in Heavy Rain, I believe. I reckon they’ve used that on his upper-lip hair (in 1886). :-)

  2. This is all well and good, it’s a mind boggling amount. But I can’t help feel like KZ mercenary was a better game…

Shadow fall looked gorgeous, but the gameplay wasn’t that great.

  3. There definitly were some levels that felt at least 5 miles long

  4. Loved the game. Hope they do more in the future with my fave FPS :-)
