Driveclub Will Be Revving Its Engine From October 7th On PS4

A release date for Driveclub has finally been confirmed by Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida, and it will be coming to PS4 on October 8th in Europe, 1oth in the UK, and the 7th in North America almost a year after it was supposed to debut on the PS4. The trailer looks really nice, and in line to what we’ve seen from the other gameplay trailers that have been released before. Paul Rustchynsky was also confirmed as Driveclub’s Game Director, and was previously director of Motorstorm RC, as well as having experience on all Evolution Studios’ titles since 2004.

Shuhei Yoshida said about the new release date:

“We planned for the game to be ready for early 2014 and are committed to delivering on our ambitious promise of creating a truly innovative, socially connected racing game. The problem with being ambitious is you have to be prepared to accept there will be challenges along the way. What DRIVECLUB offers has not been previously achieved in this category and because of this, the team needed more time to give you the game you’re waiting for.”

More information will be coming tomorrow about what we can expect from Driveclub, and possibly what caused it to be pushed back. There’s no confirmation as to whether it will still be a Plus title, but given all the publicity about it that shouldn’t change, hopefully. What do you think of the date?

Update: Sony has confirmed that Driveclub Plus Edition will be coming at the same time in October.

  1. Very very messy. Delays are nothing new, but a near 1 year delay is ridiculous for an originally touted console launch-flagship title racing game (that was a mouthful). First it was on console launch, then PS+ a little later on from that, then early to mid 2014, and now it is all the way over in Q4. Not brilliant.

    • It sounds very much like a conversation I had with one of our Project Managers a couple of weeks ago – Rather than letting the customer down several times by providing early unrealistic dates it’s often best to let them down once by providing a date further out but more realistic. The former option makes you look like a fool who can’t plan properly and is too eager to please, whereas the latter option properly explained will initially disappoint but instil confidence in the planning and management of the project.

      • Hence why it’s very mess of Sony to do this. Given the news about this game during last year, it sounds as though the devs were taking on too much, or were being pressured by Sony.

      • Aye, nothing like a little pressure from above for some poor chap in a meeting to be like a rabbit caught in the headlights, panic, and give an overly ambitious date for delivery of code. I see it almost weekly.

  2. Yikes, the same day as Alien Isolation, Dragon Age and Shadow Of Mordor? Good luck with that :/

They should try and move it up a week closer to the time and beat the rush – can see loads of people swerving this in favour of any of the above that are out the same day.

    • They should be fine, since it’s the only racing title to come in almost a year. I bet there are lots of thirsty petrolheads waiting for it (me included).

      • You think there will be no NFS in Q4?

      • F1 2014 should be out then too.

      • And The Crew!
Shame that it seems they’ll all be out around the same time.

      • Project Cars in November too…

      • Laughing my head off at that comment and the responses. It’s like a nice little satire about how badly Sony have handled this.

      • True, my mistake… Well, at least they can always count on lauching before the next GT…

  3. Sweet and more details tomorrow. Double hype.

  4. The delay is fine by me. Wouldn’t mind playing a racing game on my new PS4 system sure, but I have a decent backlog of games to work through at the moment and a few titles I want to buy between now and September as it is.
Looking forward to DriveClub and The Order leading the charge for PS4 this Christmas.

  5. Argh! Gagging to get some proper racing going on my PS4. Need for Speed just didn`t keep my interest. When is Project Cars due?

    • End of the year unfortunately. Around November time I believe.

    • Not quite the same category, but shouldn’t that ‘Ready to Run’ indie type remote control car racer be out soon? I’m sure they said a couple of months about a month ago, although the lack of in-game footage tells me it won’t be.
I don’t like Need for Speed but wouldn’t mind any kind of racing game at the moment for a change.

  6. Was hoping for an earlier release, firstly because the PS4 badly needs a racer (NFS has been awful for years), and I’d expect the F1 franchise to make the jump to PS4 around that time, which I’d rather play.

  7. VideoGamer states that Sony has confirmed PS+ version will be available at launch.

  8. I’m disappointed the total delay is almost a year, the PS4 has very much needed a racer. However I am slightly admiring of the fact Sony haven’t tried to just chuck it out the door as soon as possible and have given the team the time they wanted/needed. Ultimately judge it on the resulting release, if it’s a great game then delays will be justified.

  9. What about compatibility with steering wheels, has that been sorted..? Otherwise, I’m not interested in any of the racing games that come out for the PS4.

    • I could be accidentally making this up or dreamt it, but I’m pretty sure they mentioned ages back a couple of makes of steering wheels which will be compatible.

      • Hope you’re right, and I expect them to make the obvious PS3 ones compatible. Am just a little wary they might think ‘It’ s a new console, so everybody must buy new accessories..!’ For steering wheels, I’d definitely not appreciate that, as I won’t buy another one.

  10. The Crew is expected to be out the same time I think, and so will be this year’s F1 game, and Project Cars, plus there’ll be the usual Q4 rush – it just seems a really odd time to release it.
