Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pains Goes Dark In E3 2014 Trailer

Last week we caught a fleeting glimpse at some MGS5 gameplay footage, director Hideo Kojima saying back in May that the E3 trailer for his latest stealth action epic would be “tough to watch”.

Well, now you can judge for yourselves. Keeping one of the series’ traditions intact it’s quite a meaty video clocking in at nearly six minutes. Compared to the initial reveal and last year’s gameplay walkthrough it’s certainly more sombre in tone.

We see Punished Snake (voiced by 24’s Kiefer Sutherland) basked in blood, sweat, and ashes over a series of cuts which also include appearances from Ocelot, Quiet, and Skullface.

Fans of the series will no doubt be able to pick out some hidden gems scattered throughout the trailer, one of which could be Big Shell -the setting for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

  1. I never played a MGS game before but this trailer made me excited. I am planning to buy the MGS Legacy Collection that has all the games in it for PS3.

  2. The big shell? The one that was specifically built in 2007 after the events of the tanker section of MGS2? In this game, set in 1984? It’s Mother Base. Outer Heaven.

  3. The vid says: “Private content. We’re sorry, but we cannot display this” :-(

    • Yup it got shut down a few minutes ago, too slow amigo!

    • They brought it down really fast after the leak.

      • Ah that sucks, cheers guys.

      • Updated with new version :)

      • TC, it now reads ‘Removed by the user’. Time for a YouTube hunt I think!

  4. Coming 1984 dead God we too late already, I need my time machine.’

This trailer was awesome but big boss with a cyborg arm?

  5. WOW.

As a massive MGS fan, this trailer makes me soil myself with excitement. There are quite a few moments where it made me question things, such as the prosthetic arm on Snake… some things in the trainer don’t make sense. Knowing Kojima though.. it’ll all come together like some sort of Katamari.

It will be nice to have the gaps in the story between the events of Peace Walker and MGS1 filled in.. Big Boss is such an interesting character.

  6. In Japanesebut still stunning! Anyone else think Big Boss’s Japanese voice is better?

    • Definitely shouldn’t have changed the English voice actor, that was a bad move, still excited though.

  7. After scrolling past this story quickly, I first thought that this game was about phantom ‘pants’.

Shame, I would have preferred that!
