Competitve multiplayer within Assassin’s Creed first made an appearance almost four years ago in Brotherhood, introducing a bit of a twist in what had become an area dominated by shooters. Since then the multiplayer component has been present in all over Assassin’s Creed titles, but with Unity Ubisoft has decided to scrap the mode to focus on the cooperative element of the game.
Ubisoft’s Bruno St-André explained to Gamingbolt:
“…We made choices on the game early on that we’re going for the shared experience. This meant that we developed core mechanics more on cooperation instead of confrontation. So we put a-lot of effort into redefining the fights so that multiple players can actually engage in them and have a better strategy against the AI, which reacts differently each time. Same thing for navigation and same thing for the stealth. All of our effort and our decisions were based on this topic.”
There was recently some outcry that Unity would not include female assassins for the multiplayer, though Ubisoft eventually explained this was because every player would play as the game’s protagonist, Arno Dorian.

I really dig AC’s multiplayer but don’t mind it being left out this time. Hopefully Ubisoft is working to reinvent it somehow for next year.

I’ve wanted online co-op in AC games for ages.
I’m glad they’re killing off the Competitive Multiplayer, I thought it was awful. I played though the training and still couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on.
I gather that the co-op will also be like free roam in between missions.

These types of games are far better suited to co-op than MP. Im more than happy that they have gone down this route, take note ND.

Finally some AC multiplayer to look forward to, I really hated the previous games offerings (and I was terrible at it …).

This is fine with me. I always hated the competitive MP in the previous ones and I don’t think I actually touched it on Black Flag. Plus, this will mean those pesky trophies that take forever to collect will be omitted.

My thoughts exactly, I’m glad it’s gone – I would have the Black Flag Platinum if not for the multiplayer -__-

I too am in this camp – Never understood the love for the mp in Assassins Creed games.
Actually I could probably go one better than that statement: Never understood the mp in Assassins Creed games. :)

I love co op games. Off topic but I’ve always thought Killzone had clearly missed a trick not offering full campaign co op.
I’m glad that this is coming and being treated as the main focus – it will be so much a fun. Really looking forward to it, finally a good co op game. Driveclub now the creed, I hope the trend continues…
