What We Played #171: Metro Redux, Olli Olli & Madden 15

Kicking things off with Aran this week he reports that he’s been enjoying his return to the universe of Metro with dashes of added flair courtesy of Metro Redux.  Check out his 9/10 review. Having seen it offered for as little as £25 he reckons it’s “well worth that price”. He’s also played Tales of Xillia 2 for a review which you’ll be able to read next week.

What do you get if you mix Stefan, Watch Dogs and remote explosives? This…

He’s played some Olli Olli on PS3 and PS4 which has reawakened his former addiction and he topped everything off with some time trekking coast to coast in The Crew, the video of which you can also find elsewhere on these pages.

Blair has played through “a decent new third person platforming IP”, The Last Tinker, as well as the final episode of The Walking Dead Season 2. “The final episode was devastating and brilliant at the same time, though never quite reached the heights of season one.”  He found inFamous First Light to be “really enjoyable despite it being more of the same in most parts”. He feels that the battle arenas bring something new and enjoyable to the franchise though.

The refreshingly honest Dan J reports that he was “absolutely awful” in a few matches of Call of Duty Ghosts. But then the excuses began… “I’m sure the opposing team were superhuman. Their reaction speeds were so fast – of course I blame my internet connection. They were better than the AI set to veteran, so I rage quit.” There’s also been some Football Chairman played on his phone. He’s made it to the year 2083 so far and complains that in those 70 or so years England have only won the World Cup once. The game seems overly optimistic to me.

And that just leaves Dom to see us out:

This week I’ve been mostly playing Madden 15 as I bought into EA’s Access. To be honest, I had bought it for Battlefield 4, Madden 25 and early access to Dragon Age, and really I had no interest in Madden 15 at all.

However, it’s genuinely a huge step forward for the franchise, with playing defence just as much fun as offense. What this ultimately led to was far too much soul searching over whether to carry on on Xbox One, or buy it for PS4 where I mainly play, with the X1 winning out due to having played six hours of it already.

I also played a good bit more of Diablo 3, which is still absolutely awesome. I’ve downloaded the Mario Kart Mercedes DLC too so I’ll give that a go tonight.

What have you played?

  1. Great video from Tef – would be great to have a weekly TSA Staff video for WWP, especially with the recording functionality!

Mostly CounterSpy this week on PS4, PS3 and Vita (used Vita for my Advanced run as there are less enemies). I just need to do the final mission on both formats to get both 100% trophy lists! Both factions are at DEFCON 5 so should be simple enough. Great, addictive game!

Then I’ve played a lot of The Last of Us Remastered multiplayer, obviously. Also a bit of Escape Plan DLC on PS4.

The PS3 got a second use this week, played (but didn’t quite get to finish) episode 5 of The Walking Dead episode 2. Really good episode actually, although I think they are getting much short than the first seasons’ episodes. (Same applied to The Wolf Among Us). Should finish that tonight.

Metro Redux came, but doubt I’ll start that until I’ve finished another couple of games off!

    • Oh! I’ve got a corker from last night… Had me laughing for a good 3-4 minutes.

  2. Lots and lots of Diablo 3 UEE on PS4. It’s such an addictive game.
Aside from that I’ve also played a few rounds of The Golf Club (courtesy of the US PSN store getting it a week early). It’s very good, difficult but enjoyable.
I also played a little of Pure Pool and Surgeon Simulator to check that the new patches for both had fixed the glitchy trophies (which they seem to have done).

  3. Rinse and repeat from last week for me and my son. Diablo3 for me (30 minute sessions turn in to 4 hours!) and PVZ Garden Warfare for my son.

I’ve also had a very quick go at the drinking games in Watch Dogs, which, as soon as I complete them to gain the Platinum trophy, is being traded in. It’s been an absorbing game with the Gang Hideouts being the best part. I think the next couple of iterations of this game will flesh out the game’s side missions, balance the campaign missions and fix up the frankly pointless online sessions.

    • I hope the next WD game provides more campaign missions rather then the numerous, repetitive side missions. The combat was pretty solid I thought, which is why I rather enjoyed the Gang Hideouts too. I don’t think the online was pointless though, that was the most surprisingly good thing about the game for me – I thought I’d hate the online but it was really decent, quite a buzz hiding from people trying not to get caught, particularly in the dying seconds!

  4. This week I’ve mostly been playing Road Not Taken which is a beautiful game but has a brutal difficulty curve.

I picked up PvZ Garden Warfare as a stop gap until Destiny came out. I’ve not managed to get into it yet so might just sell it on.

I’ve also been playing Olli Olli on PS4. Addictive game but I’m glad I’ve already swapped out my DS4 thumbsticks because this game would kill them for sure.

  5. Taken a bit of a step back from gaming so pretty much nothing for me this week. Played a tiny bit of Titanfall over the weekend but otherwise my games consoles have been used for NowTV and Netflix this week.
Might return to Octodad this weekend as its currently sat at 25% complete on my trophy list and its bugging me, lol.

  6. This week I finally went back to finish watch dogs and bag the platinum. It was song sneak and being tailed 5 times that took forever!
Also started infamous first light and finished ep 5 of walking dead season 2. Such a good game with difficult choices!

  7. Counter Spy – enjoying it loads but don’t seem very talented at it. Hohokum is proving a relaxing and confusingly enjoyable experience. The kids are keeping me away from the Last of us which unlike those other two games demands the TV, surround sound and at least 90minutes…

  8. Tried a bit of God of War: Ascension, which I found quite limp and dull compared to previous GOW games.

  9. Just bought Metro Redux in town. £33, but looks like I’d only save a few quid buying online, and after I spunk a bullseye in the pub tonight, that isn’t really gonna matter!

  10. Lots of Diablo III on the PS4 – so much fun when played with friends, loving the Crusader and the Barbarian although the Demon Hunter is quite fun as well.

Also been spinning around the cosmos on Elite Dangerous.

Wasn’t going to bother with Madden 15 as I picked up Madden 25 and the games rarely change from release to release very much that you can normally skip 2 or 3 releases before updating.

    • Madden 15 is a big jump from 25 – both graphically and gameplay-wise. Easily the best Madden I’ve played in years.
