According to an MCV source Sony’s PS4 UK sales have experienced the biggest week of the year, resulting in a 300% spike thanks to the launch of Destiny. Sony wasn’t the only console maker to see a spike as Microsoft also had increased sales recently, which may be down to a mix of Destiny and the one week deal where people who bought an Xbox One could get any game for the console free. The ratio of sales was two to one in favour of the PS4, but it paints a good picture for the industry in the UK.
This week also saw the PS3 sales beat Xbox 360 in hardware sales, though this could be attributed to the Destiny bundle that Sony has for the console. It’s been a mixed week in terms of financial and business news for Sony, with PS4 sales being the fastest ever selling console in Asia from the company, while US sales also had a huge week this week. However on the other side, Sony is expected to make a $1.3 billion loss this financial year due to its ailing smartphone business.

Mr Blighty
”ailing smartphone business”
Hardly surprising when blogs write tripe like this.
Sony mobiles are some of the best you can buy. Their problem: US mobile networks lock out the market and if the networks decide to carry someone else’s phones, you don’t sell phones. The problem is then compounded by consumers globally being influenced by American purchasing trends.

All of Sony’s products are amongst the best you can buy.
I’ve been looking at an Xperia to replace my ageing smartphone.
Mr Blighty
I wouldn’t day all, but plenty are. The Z3 is far and away the best smartphone on the market, bar none.
JR.
But their smartphone business IS ailing. They’re posting a pretty huge loss because they aren’t selling as well as they hoped. Maybe Sony could improve their marketing a little. They had some great ad’s for the Z1 but I haven’t seen a single ad for the Z3. I didn’t even know the Z2 existed until now.

I have the smaller sibling of the family in a Z1 compact, good little phone.

Hardware wise, i agree, but in the software departement, they are (or were) years behind other android devices. I dont know how it is now, but when i had my X10 years ago, i would always have to wait ages for the update to the new os-versions, which was the main reason for me for switching to samsung…

Mr Blighty… I’m not quite sure what you’re getting at. Sony is really, really struggling with the mobile phone division. Talks of 15% job losses for the department so it can try to stem the flow of money pouring out.
Why come in here with such a strong reaction against something that’s clearly true? Whether the handsets are wonderful or not, it’s ALL about the sales.
Starman
Yep, and I believe 1bn of the 1.3bn losses were due to the smartphone section. If that’s not ailing I don’t know what is.
Especially when Blighty recently said Microsoft’s last financials ( 200m+ profit) “wouldn’t be accepted much longer by shareholders”
Its a shame he never replies when he knows he’s totally wrong.

I’ve been looking at the Z1 and i have to say it’s an impressive piece of kit,i think i’ll buy one for my birthday in January and treat the missus to one for hers the month after.I don’t bother with phones but she does and the Z1 looks like it would last a couple of years.I’m just gutted for SONY losing money in the mobile phone department especially after not long selling off it’s computer business and pumping the money back in.Let’s they sort it out and manage to turn things around.
