What We Played #175: Destiny, Driveclub & Super Smash Bros.

I haven’t played Destiny since launch week. Even when I’ve had little else to play on my PS4, I keep subconsciously glossing over it, pushing the MMO shooter further and further towards the retirement shelf. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy my time with the game – I will no doubt return to Destiny at some point – but this week other game’s have drawn my attention.

The first of these is Batman: Arkham Origins. Although I loved the first two game’s in the series, I always knew I wasn’t going to pick up the instalment at launch. Considering how soon it came after Arkham City I knew that any improvements would be merely incremental, especially without Rocksteady on development duty. All in all I enjoyed Origins yet it felt way too similar to its predecessor and didn’t really capitalise on its intriguing set-up as much as I would have liked.

With first semester in full swing, as a university student, there’s no escaping the enthralling allure of local multiplayer. This means that I’ve developed an uncharacteristic adoration for FIFA 15 as well as Mario Kart 8, while also giving me the opportunity to dig out classics such as SARPBC and the timeless Crash Team Racing.

Someone who has yet to give Destiny the cold shoulder is Stefan, despite having his raid progress reset during Bungie’s weekly wipe. He got there in the end, however, thanks to help of fellow TSA members  Jambo, Sifo, Wick, Dave and, of course, “George”. Take a bow, brave guardians.

Aside from hosting various TSA broadcasts during EGX, Tuffcub has also found time to play Destiny as well as he go-to handheld solution for those monotonous commutes, Borderlands 2.

Aran also spent some time with Destiny this week, bagging himself a coveted exotic item. It’s just a shame that it turned out to be for the wrong class. The Cryptarch works in cruel and mysterious ways, but hopefully players will have more luck thanks to Bungie’s recent loot-balancing patch.

Blair’s travels up and down Britain left him with plenty of spare time on his hands. It’s lucky, then, that he happened to have a copy of Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS knocking about:

I’m really enjoying it. It made tube and bus journeys through London much more enjoyable. I still think it’s far too focused on multiplayer for a game on a handheld system, but the classic mode is good.

Finally we have Peter who’s been spending time with some hot upcoming releases:

I’ve been playing Alien Isolation for review but the embargo isn’t up until later today so I can’t tell you how good it is. Or isn’t. It’s a mystery!

I’ve also played a bit more Forza Horizon 2, which is still quite brilliant, and a tiny little bit of DriveClub, which is absolutely gorgeous to look at and controls quite nicely but is significantly more of an arcade racer than I’d thought previously. That’s definitely not a bad thing, it’s very fun, but die hard PlayStation racers will probably have to wait for the next Gran Turismo for their proper racing sim.
I’ve just got the beta for The Crew to play too, so it’s racing all week long next week!

So, how many of you are still grinding your way through Destiny’s endgame? Has another game caught your eye, or are you eagerly awaiting today’s new releases?

  1. Just destiny again for me this week. I’m almost at level 28,I just need loads of ascendent shards! I still haven’t got any legendary weapons yet though! I’m working on an exotic bounty, the last stage is to beat the summoning pits strike at level 26.

  2. Doing some more of the raid tonight was hoping to be level 28 but those ascendant shards are so hard to come by. The first bit was mad. Platforming and everything.

  3. Looks like quite a few of us are after ascendant shards i for one need a shit load of them to upgrade my armour and they’re hard to come by.I did get an exotic bounty quest last night it’s for a weapon, all i have to do is 5 strikes without dieing. You watch it’ll be for a different class.

    • Ha! You’ll get a pretty good secondary for that, actually. I just hope it suits your playstyle.

      • Ahh… The glorious Invective! Be warned, these exotic bounties have many steps, some of which can be quite onerous. Give me a shout (Shaklyn / PS4) if you need a hand with any of the steps.

    • I was offered an exotic bounty last night – Two of the three I was offered were all about strikes & stuff (which I have purposely avoided until I am a decent level, as I died quite a lot on the one I tried), so I went with the ambiguous one of “go speak with the warlock vanguard”.

So I did. Lo & behold, she wanted me to complete 5 strikes without dying!

I abandoned it straight away. No way that was happening.

      • Oh yeah i found out the hard way as @Eldur says “they have many steps”.The 5 Strikes was easy i just did the Earth ones so i went to the warlock vanguard to hand it in and wadda ya know i had to do another one. This time get a 25 k/d ratio on multiplayer, that was pretty easy and once again i went back to the warlock vanguard and again got given the task of completing a weekly challenge. Not done that yet and will need help but i’m buying a ps4 bundle this week with Destiny as one of the games so i’ll be playing Destiny on ps4 from then onwards.I only hope this will be the last task as the carrot on a stick is pissing me off.
