Microsoft Approach 10 Million Xbox Ones Shipped, Sales Triple After Price Cut

Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox One to $349 in the US for this holiday season, and it seems to be doing wonders for the console. While still a few million behind PlayStation (perhaps even several, depending on how much stock retailers have), sales have “skyrocketed” and they have sold in 10 million units to retailers, or at least will have “shortly”.

Compared to the week before the price cut, sales in the US have more than tripled, and for the past two weeks the Xbox One has led in terms of current generation consoles sold. Yusuf Mehdi of Microsoft said:

The response to this wave of blockbuster game releases and new bundles has been amazing, and sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect on Nov. 2. Compared to the previous week, Xbox One sales in the US have more than tripled, which is exciting as more and more friends will be playing together this holiday.

It seems as though getting rid of Kinect did wonders, and having a couple of great exclusives in Sunset Overdrive and The Master Chief Collection has proved more successful than Sony’s Driveclub.

  1. Looks like sales are finally picking up. Lots of great games out on it now and some cool OS & app features that work really well.

    (yes I know shipped doesn’t = sold)

  2. Great news for Microsoft. I’m looking forward to Sony raising their game so consumers are looked after even better than before. :-)

  3. Not surprising considering they’re finally releasing some exclusives.
There’s been f-all on the console since Titanfall that you weren’t able to play elsewhere (generally with better performance as well)
Who’d have thought that pricing your console lower than the stronger one and actually releasing some exclusives would increase sales!

    • To be fair they’ve had exclusives since day 1. More boxed exclusives especially.

      • To be fair I did say “since Titanfall”
How many exclusives have they released (boxed or otherwise) between Titanfall and Forza?
Suppose there’s nothing new with that for XB owners. When I had a 360 it was the same, maybe one game early in the year (if you’re lucky) then f-all until Xmas. MS don’t do year round game support.

But I’m sure some MS apologists will have an excuse for that and claim it’s justified.

      • Well, I know there was Dead Rising 3 & Sunset Overdrive (which I was jealous about both), but I have a feeling that Dead Rising was out before & Sunset Overdrive was after.

      • There’s been plenty of digital only releases since Titanfall, not sure how many boxed though I won’t waste my time listing them all. Its the same with PS4 though, nothing since Infamous. Its just the usual quiet summer months. Nothing to do with being a “Microsoft apologist”

  4. I see they’re still saying “shipped” instead of “sold”. Hey ho.

    • “shipped shortly” is the new “sold”

  5. But what if sales to consumers, shipping to retailers ain’t solid numbers, how many households with xbone

    • Lots? And then one guy with two million of them in his garage, next to his Tracey Islands and slightly dirty E.T. cartridges.

  6. Good news for Microsoft and good to see the Xbox One selling better.

This doesn’t stop the “shipped” vs “sold” argument being a perfectly valid one though – but that’s now what bugs me this time… it’s that this number isn’t even applicable now, it’s “shortly”. Ugh – silly people using meaningless statistics drives me up the wall :-p

  7. Nice, perfect time for Halo and Call of Duty plus Xmas prezzies xD
Tempted to get one if there will be Gears of War HD Trilogy.

  8. I’ve been telling myself I’m gonna put the new blinds up in my bathroom ‘shortly’… I’ve been telling myself that for a year.

  9. Good that sales have picked up, the console deserves it. Phil Spencer and the team have really turned things around from a f*cked up mess of a release to (IMO) the better system this Xmas.
Some good marketing and word of mouth should keep things afloat, with next year apparently being “so busy they may have to move things back”. If they confirm Gears of War along with Halo 5 and Crackdown 3 next year it will be another very exciting Xmas.

    • Yep, thoroughly deserved. Its crazy how much they have turned things around over 12 months.
I expect to see a Gears of War trilogy launching this time next year in the same manner as the Chief Collection (Gears 4 in 2016?). Day one buy for sure.

      • Yes to this! Just as a revisit of the Halo universe was right on time, I’d love to get back into Gears again too.

      • I love my X1 but it just doesn’t feel right without Gears :(

    • Would love a remastered Alan Wake too, but doubt that will happen.

  10. The only way was up after the launch debacle but fair play to Microsoft for the stunning turnaround of unseen proportion ;)
