HTC have announced that they are working in partnership with Valve to create a new VR headset called Vive.

Consumers will be able to get their hands on the headset later this year, while a developer edition of the headset will be available this spring. The device uses an accelerometer, gyrosensor, and a laser position sensor to track head movements as precisely as possible. The Vive will also use SteamVR base stations which will track your physical movement enabling you to walk around the virtual space without the aid of a controller.
The hardware will be available with a pair of wireless controllers which are essential for manipulation of objects and firing weapons. While the Vive will work well with games, it is also set to enhance other experiences including virtual reality with partners such as Lionsgate, Google and HBO who will be creating content for the headset.
The Vive will have a significant presence at the Game Developers Conference this week where devs will get the chance to test out the kit. Expect to hear more news later this week.

With each new entry to the VR market, i have to wonder if we will see a day when all the different techs combine to a uniform standard – or whether each company will seek to promote their own tech individually.
Having a lot of different companies designing their own tech means better overall results for the concept in the longterm, but who among them will be willing to drop their own patents in favour of adopting a unified standard? My guess is none of them but it will be interesting to see.

I know we’ve been stung by all the past failed promises like Move, but at the risk of sounding like a beaten wife – this time its different. The silly money that is being pumped into it and the caliber of people that are now working on bringing VR to the masses really makes me think its going to be a game changer. Plus literally everyone who tries VR instantly becoming an evangelical convert.
