Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has confirmed that new hardware is currently in development. The new device was mentioned during the reveal of the partnership between Nintendo and DeNA and is currently codenamed ‘NX’.
“Let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX’,” said Iwata. Â “It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.”
There is no word on what NX actually is other than it is being described as a “dedicated game system” which suggests a home console or handheld. Even though the Wii U is still technically in its infancy the sales have been well below those of the original Wii, perhaps NX is it’s successor.

A year too late? The wii u is underrated but with ps4 & xbone selling like hot cakes, Nintendo left it a lil too late to respond. I feel the new console will go along the same way as wii u performance sales wise

I don’t think Nintendo ever have any hope of competing with the likes of Sony and Microsoft now. They need to do their own thing but, most importantly, they need to up the rate of new games being released. I love my Wii U and just wish I had more reasons to play it. Starfox and Splatoon will be a good start.

I think it will be a handheld with the ability to output to tv

That would be the most logical thing for them to do, hope they do announce it.

They are in a difficult position but i feel they have brought it on themselves by taking the Wii’s success too much for granted. They must have made a mint on the Wii and they could have used that to develop hardware to equal PS4/XB1 instead of a device for a generation that was approaching the end of it’s shelf-life.
Whatever they are developing is probably still a few years away from launch so it will be interesting to see where they are targetting in comparison to the PS4/XB1.

Has to be 4DS now, no?
I mean, it’s been at least a week since their last handheld release. ;)

I’m expecting both a 3DS successor and a new home console around 2017. We know they might share OS and architecture, so it could be that. But it could also be a third pillar. Exciting either way.

Its obvious that theyre carving their own route in their own territory in the gaming world, but I do wonder if they’re making the right decision..
The Wii was a step in the right direction for them financially but their innovations after the fact seem to be hindering them. Relying on a piece of hardware to bridge mobile gaming across the board is a tall order if you think of the variety of handsets and tablets out there.

Is nintendo’s new financial strategy just releasing a new console everyone year?

The Nintendo brand is an acquired taste and one that I acquired donkey kongs years ago :P
It is an exciting announcement because it will be a new home console to rival the capabilities of current gen Sony and Microsoft offerings….no way it’ll be a handheld!
