Sony Have Sold Over 22.3m PlayStation 4 Consoles

The latest Sony financial reports show that they have sold over 22.3m PlayStation 4 consoles, which is around 44,000 consoles per day, or around one every two seconds. That means by the time you have read this sentence, they’ve sold a couple more.

Eurogamer have helpfully extracted the information from the report which also shows Sony expect to have shifted around 38 million PlayStation 4’s by this time next year. However, the excellent sales of the big console are tempered by falling sales of the handheld devices, with the combined sales of the PSP, PS TV and PS Vita dropping 1.1m compared to last year.

The Games and Network Services division, which includes PlayStation, is now the most profitable arm of the company and helping to cancel out losses from the mobile phone division.

The interesting numbers are a little father down the report, the Home Entertainment & Sound division, which includes televisions, has had a remarkable turnaround with TV sales jumping 10.7%. This meant the TV section reporting a 8.3 billion yen (69 million U.S. dollars) operating profit , compared to an operating loss of 25.7 billion yen in the previous fiscal year. Although some of that is due to the fluctuating  yen/dollar rates, it is also due down to Kaz Hirai’s restructuring plans.

However, Sony still posted a massive loss overall, a large part of which was due to exiting the PC business. Things are slowly improving for the company and PlayStation is the star of the show.

  1. Not surprised the VITA has fallen flat on its face. It was touted as a AAA handheld device. Then when day 1 buyers purchased it like me, all we had for 24 months were indie titles. Thats not what was promised and not what i paid over £200 for.

    • I bought one just over 12 months ago and was/am very impressed with it’s capabilities, however, I totally agree about lack of AAA games. The games available, bar a handful, woeful under use the Vita’s technology and mine has pretty much become a portable minecraft gadget for my lad.

  2. It was worth Sony making the PS4 then!
Glad to see the TV arm doing better. Maybe this time next year the whole of the Sony corporation will be in profit….. Maybe not!

  3. Had a quick look at the report, mobile communications is the main ‘let down’. Sales revenue up 11% but it went from a small profit the previous year to a huge $1.8B loss, The only reason given is currency rates….

    • Scroll down further, the “All other” section that includes the PC busines.. “Operating loss decreased 32.7 billion yen year-on-year to 103.4 billion yen” – thats the big hit.

      • Yeah but that was expected due to shutting down their PC division about, and losses weren’t as high as last year, it should be a much lower amount next year.

    • I think Sonys mobile division is falling into the same trap the TV division did, oversaturating their own product-line with new flagships every six months.

  4. All the more reason to all allow paid for name changes….. Please SONY I BEG YOU!
