Community Chronicle: 10/05/15

Well, I think we can say it’s been an interesting week. Not necessarily in the gaming world, but more in the real world, as pollsters were roundly proved to be, well, completely and utterly wrong during a general election that surprised many with its result.

At least they were right in saying it was “unpredictable”.

The biggest story of the week in terms of user comments was that of the PS Now triggered PS+ issues. Many of those involved in the beta suddenly found themselves being locked out of online play and their digital content, despite owning some things outright and having many months left on their PS+ subscriptions.

Dekyno9 was the first to share his tale of woe:

It started when I bought Alien: Isolation and a Resident Evil game last week. Despite being charged and getting an email confirming the purchase, the PS store doesn’t think I bought either. I called support and they told me to restore my licenses and as soon as I did that I was locked out of everything and my PS Plus was removed.

But the comments were simply filled with similar stories of the issue. That the problems were rumbling along over the bank holiday weekend certainly didn’t help matters, but thankfully, Sony did come up with a workaround and fix on Tuesday morning.

KittDJW said, “Looks like the tech guys were working late last night as downloads didn’t work yesterday, but I can confirm everything isnow working for me. Library unlocked and PS+ back.” Though not hit by the problem, Camdaz then added, “Although I haven’t been affected I’m glad to see Sony have come up with a solution pretty quickly. I’m still going to give the Now Beta a wide berth until I know it’s completely safe.”

EA indulged their shareholders by revealing many of their plans for the coming year ahead of E3 during a financial statement. Of course, we can expect to see the usual boatload of sports games and Need for Speed is making a return after a year off, but Mirror’s Edge has been pencilled in for the start of 2016 and there’s also the prospect of another Plants vs. Zombies shooter.

Carrot381 simply stated that “More PvZ has my attention.” To which Tonyyeb replied, “I really hope it is a sequel to Garden Warfare!! That game is awesome.”

Andreww meanwhile bemoaned the wait that was left for Mirror’s Edge 2, saying, “One more year to wait for fantastic Mirror’s Edge… that’s a long time. But who knows, maybe I’ve got rid of my PS3 backlog by then.”

Yet beeje13 pondered the scheduling and DICE’s involvement in both Star Wars: Battlefront and Mirror’s Edge 2. “Pleasantly surprised by that release date,” he said, “only 3 months after DICE’s other game Battlefront, makes me scratch my head a little bit.”

With over 500 employees, according to Wikipedia, DICE is a simply huge studio that can easily handle multiple projects at once and has often been the bedrock of EA’s development process. Don’t forget that somewhere within their building, there is going to be a small group of people working on Battlefield 5, as well…

Finally, though hardly the biggest news story of the week, Schrödinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark’s impending console release brought with it some mind bending comments.

“I heard it’s also not launching next Wednesday,” wrote MrYd. “It’ll be both launched and not launched until someone at Sony looks to see if they managed to successfully update the store without any problems for a change. At which point everyone gets confused apart from physicists who will declare ‘Yes, that shit happens all the time, you get used to it. Or at least try and ignore it.'”

“That’s gotta be comment of the week, Mr Yd. Or not,” replied TSBonyman.

Of course, MrYd couldn’t leave well alone, and had to respond to say, “I guess we find out when someone looks.”

“And technically what you meant there was ‘And not.’ The whole quantum cat shenanigans thing isn’t that it’s dead or alive and you don’t know until you look. It’s that it’s dead and alive and you don’t know until you look. Then you’ve got a box with a dead cat in. Or possibly a box with a really angry cat in.

“It might possibly have been dead all along once you open the box, but that might involve more than one universe and deciding which interpretation of quantum mechanics is right. Which is obviously not something to do on a Saturday night.”

Quite.

Youles kicks things off this week, by getting his 81st platinum trophy with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, which he deemed to be the easiest CoD to platinum yet. With all the extra time he had as a consequence, he was then able to buy the Guacamelee! DLC and 100% it.

This all took him to trophy level 27, which is most impressive, just as a inferior race skipped on to level 22 thanks to the platinum trophy for Magus.

Despite the PS+ woes, DividSmythe managed to earn his first platinum of the year with the PS Now version of Beyond: Two Souls. Camdaz, meanwhile, managed to polish off the most recent Driveclub DLC, just in time for Project CARS to come flying through his letterbox.

Andrewww had another “religious experience” while playing Alien: Isolation’s Survivor mode, as Severn2j found himself worshiping his new 1440p monitor. “PC gaming has been back in front for me,” he shared, “and I’ve (re)started playing through Dying Light, The Evil Within, Pillars of Eternity and Elite: Dangerous, all in glorious 1440p.”

Sounds delightful!

A inferior race has been busily tapping your latest trophies into his tables, and you can head over to page 2 to view the latest trophy leaderboard. Meanwhile, I leave you with the usual submissions form below:

  1. Yay! I’ve confused people with science. And quite probably not confused people with science as well ;)

And finally got myself on that trophy leaderboard.

    • My grasp of quantum physics was threadbare to begin with anyway , well done on the leaderboard :)

      • If you said you understood it, I’d call you a liar. The great Richard Feynman once said “I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics”. That was some time ago (what with him being dead for 27 years), but it’s still true. Everyone’s grasp of it is “threadbare”. It’s weird and makes no sense, but rather annoyingly works.

He never said the same thing about the bongos though.

    • I’m thinking there is one thing we can all learn from Schrödinger’s Cat theory (or whatever it is). If you work in a pet shop and someone bearing the name Schrödinger wants to buy a cat, refuse to serve him. Second thoughts, give them a 2 for 1 or BOGOF offer.
