What We Played #203: Grand Theft Auto, Project CARS & Not A Hero

Another week has come and gone here at TSA, which means it’s time once again for What We Played, the little piece we write up each Friday to keep you in the loop about what your favorite TSA staffers have been playing, and to hear what you’ve been up to as well.

It was a week of fast cars and heists for most us, and Mark definitely participated in the former, racing along with Project CARS for a good chunk of his week. He made what has been a common observation thus far, that the first lap in qualifying on cold tires can be a bit of an adventure. He’s also been checking out the online portion, where he’s had mixed results, with a couple of podiums here and there, but a few bad runs as well.

Jim checked in next and preferred heisting to racing in his games this week. He originally owned GTA V on PS3, but it got lost in the shuffle of other games before he could finish it. His time with it on PS4 has been a different experience. He just completed it, and he had very positive things to say about the cast, the humor, and the side missions.

Aside from that, here’s what else Jim was up to:

I slipped back into PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on my PS Vita. It saddens me how truly underrated that game is. Even after playing the new Smash Bros. it’s still my favourite brawler-type fighting game thanks to its sharp gameplay and super-based KO system. Please, please, please let there be a sequel on its way.

Robot Dom continued to plow through games with his son Noah this week, partaking in the finale of the first part of Lego Lord Of The Rings, and the Avengers story mode of Disney Infinity 2.0, with the Spiderman set next on their agenda. With the kiddo tucked into bed, Dom moved on to the latest remaster of Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. He also found time for Monster Hunter 4 and Killer Instinct, and even briefly considered starting Assassin’s Creed Unity, but quickly thought better of it.

Miguel had a bit of a busy week reviewing games, starting with Breach and Clear. Unfortunately, while not terrible, he didn’t think very highly of it and scored it a mediocre 5 out of 10. He then moved on to Not A Hero, which you can read his thoughts on here. Finally, he continued his quest to become a fashion extraordinaire in Style Savvy Trendsetters.

Stefan spent a good portion of his week playing Project CARS for review, which he says is a “great racing sim hidden behind awful menus.” From there he moved on to Knights of Pen & Paper 2, which he described as a “quirky mobile RPG within an RPG.” Finally, he returned to his normal stomping grounds in Destiny, and he held up a liquor store or two in GTA V.

Finally there’s Tuffcub, who decided to play through GTA V after much harassment from myself and a couple of other staffers. Turns out he’s mostly enjoyed it. He’s particularly enjoyed the bits with Michael and Trevor, while Franklin is his least favorite to play as. Here’s a few more of his thoughts, straight from the cub’s mouth.

I’ve never got in to GTA before, all the other games were rubbish but I’m enjoying this one. It is dragging on though, I must have been playing for thirty hours and still not finished the story and it’s becoming a little tedious. Also the game has a habit of shoving the next mission right on the other side of the map, just to prolong the game and make you drive for ten minutes.

At some point one of us should probably tell him about the fast travel option via the taxi cabs. Anyway, he’s also been playing the Unfinished Swan, and reviewed Ultratron this week.

As for me, I’ve also been playing the rubber out of Project CARS, and I agree with just about everything Stefan had to say in his review. The car handling is often spot-on, but there are a few bugs to deal with and the career menus are a pain to navigate at times. I also continued playing through the heists in GTA V, and my group has just the last heist remaining, which we should be able to tackle this weekend.

So now it’s your turn. Head to the comments and fill us in on what’s going on in your gaming life. Maybe you don’t have a gaming life? That’s ok, normal life is usually more noble. It’s just often a lot less fun.

  1. Some GTA heists on the PS3.

Nothing on Vita (with respect to what I played, not to be confused with upcoming games).

On PS4 it’s been some Project CARS; I got 100% trophies in the first Advanced Warfare Exo Zombies DLC and only need a few to 100% the second DLC; and I also 100%’ed the Guacamelee! STCE DLC.

Going to play some Dying Light with Crazy_Del this evening.

  2. Busy week left little game time for me so just the odd blast on Rogue Legacy and the occasional game of PvZ Garden Warfare.

  3. Had the week off work so I got stuck into some retro gaming. Played a fair bit of Final Fantasy VI, nearly finished it now and I have slightly mixed feelings towards it.

I understand its one of the most loved entries in the series but I just haven’t taken a shine to it, but I have started to enjoy it more as time wore on. I’m 30 hours in now and nearly ready to tackle the final boss, so perhaps the ending will turn things around for me.

Apart from that I bought a 2DS cheap on ebay and tried it out with some Advance Wars: Dark Conflict and Kirby’s Dreamland.

    • I loved the Advanced Wars games, although the AI could be brutal at times!

      • This is my first, I just randomly bought it in game about a year ago and never got around to powering up my wife’s old 3DS to try it out. (Too busy powering up my wife instead.)

Only three missions in so far but I like what I see, looking forward to the challenge.

      • To be fair I only played the first couple, but later on the missions can be very tough – good luck! :)

  4. Not much this week. Just a little Hell Divers, DriveClub & BF4.

  5. Destiny. Fantastic game, let down by stupendously over-expensive DLC. Played it for a week, but it’s close to being sold for the sheer fact that the brilliant framework is not supported by content. Still, I’ve enjoyed my time with it. Ironically Extinction in CoD lasted me longer, weird as that might sound.

  6. Pretty much the same as the last few weeks…with the addition of some Project Cars. Dying Light co-op with Forrest, Pixel and berzerka, Borderlands 2 co-op with Forrest and Pixel, grinding xp in Pure Pool, Shovel Knight NG+ and Diablo 3.
I’ll probably be playing a fair bit of D3 over the next few days as there’s a special cow event happening between now and next Thursday … although my copy of The Witcher 3 has apparently been dispatched so that could well put a dampener on that plan.

    • Damn, I knew I forgot something. Myself, Pixel and berzerka have also been playing the Rocket League beta. It’s so much fun, I’m really looking forward to the full game.

  7. Not much due to being away from home with work, but funnily enough I’ve also revisited GTAV on PS3 this last week and have continued the story missions; amongst the general hooning around and many failed attempts to steal a jet fighter from the base! (it must be possible yes?!)

Must admit though I didn’t know about the taxis either but luckily I don’t mind driving around the map as I’m always amazed at how good it looks for last-gen. Would be nice to double-dip on PS4 but not until it starts to come down in price a bit…

  8. Mostly same again for me,Borderlands with R1MJAW and Forrest on Monday, some Project Cars a bit of Hardline and Axiom Verge also quite a few games of Plants vs Zombies GW,A little Destiny,Advanced Warfare and Maddening Overload played Rocket League with Berzerka and R1M last night and Forrest will be joining us for Dying Light tonight oh and played a few levels of Lost Orbit.

  9. Proj Cars mainly, and eventually found a decent controller set up after multiple fails with the cars handling/behaviour like arse’s doing the twist. Here goes….select controller mode 2 then adjust the Steering sensitivity down from 20 to 5 and leave the rest of the settings default…..so simples :(
Obviously after this initial and important set up you must choose your own car set ups to suit in each discipline….loads of settings but there are a few key one’s that’ll help bolster some fast laps! Personal driving preference is the main factor here so I won’t trouble you with my oversteer biased set ups!

  10. Actually had a brilliant week of gaming. And cheap too! My PS4 doesn’t know what’s hit it! I’ve been jumping between 4 games, and have been enjoying them all in equal measures!
Firstly Child of Light, which I really didn’t think would be my cuppa, but was dirt cheap.
Secondly AC Chronicles China, which is great.
Then Battlefield 4, just playing the campaign, but again, was cheap as chips.
Then finally, Wolfenstein Old Blood, nothing groundbreaking, but solid, enjoyable and £14 in Tesco.
