Nate And Sully Are Reunited In E3’s Stunning Uncharted 4 Gameplay Demo

It happened in December and it happened again at E3, as a technical hiccup went a long way to proving that this was a live demo of Uncharted 4. When it’s Naughty Dog and the game looks this good, it just makes it feel all the more impressive, even if it was just a controller struggling to sync to its PS4.

Nate and Sully were reunited for this demo, as they bust open a door into a crowded market place in Madagascar, packed with dozens of people to push through, but with a vast and beautiful vista off to the left. Of course, the bad guys make an appearance, leading to a particularly fluid looking combat sequence, with a lot of options available when it came to moving from one scrap of destructible cover to the next. It’s a little reminiscent of Nepal from Uncharted 2, if you ask me.

But what really impressed was a downhill chase sequence in which Drake was almost certainly in control of a jeep, rather than being on the rails – nothing was explicitly stated, but the video plays out ever-so-slightly differently to what was shown on stage, and a post on Naughty Dog’s site says as much – as he and Sully try to avoid an armoured truck by choosing different paths and streets to head down. The incidental dialogue was absolutely pitch perfect, as well.

And it was all capped off with an audacious attempt to get onto a convoy of vehicles by way of a grappling hook, leading up to an excellent cliffhanger moment.

  1. Damn it, take my money!!!

  2. There doesn’t appear to be anything particularly innovating gameplay-wise, but it just doesn’t matter – I’m ready for some more Uncharted now, it’s been a while.

    And those environments! And vehicles!!

    • Thing is, if they try something truly different in might alienate the fan-base. Also, they’re pretty much at the top of their game so it’s just a series of refinements wrapped around a new game. Hopefully that’ll be enough. If they want a more drastic departure then The Last of Us (and whatever else they’re pushing through the concept stage) will be the way to go.

      • Yeah true, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. It’s lovely to see some very detailed animations for picking up the gun etc.

        I’m very excited for this!

  3. Impressive.

  4. I’m back in the hype train.

  5. Spectacular! That tank is persistent, I’ll give him that.

  6. Stunning, the destructibility and density of the environments and objects and that car chase teased a less linear style of game.

  7. Don’t think I’m going to bother with this one – Uncharted generally peaked for me with the first two (the first one being something a bit fresh & different at the time & the second refining lots of things from the first), but the third one just felt like more of the same & as a result got pretty dull pretty fast for me.

I don’t think I’m going to be able to shake that same feeling with this one, regardless of what they may or may not have done with it.

  8. I need more Uncharted, easy as that! Don’t need much more innovative gameplay, I could live off of the dialogue almost! Love the series, and for my part, at least this far, they can keep milking this!

  9. Naughty Dog giving purpose to ‘next gen’.

  10. Stunning. They can keep milking Uncharted untill the cow run’s dry and I would still buy everyone of them!
